Abstinence-only sex ed rears it's ugly head once again
Well, our school is teaching abstinence-only sex ed.
They're using a program called "Project Reality" that's promoted by NBA player A.C. Green. He points out in the program that he's still a virgin and he's "saving himself for marriage". My brother (MacPrince) and I did some research on this organization and the very first link that turned up was to the Illinois Christian Coalition, leaving no doubt as to their status as a fundie group. First, is this type of "sex ed" (if you can call it that) legal/constitutional? And second, what is the best way to deal with this situation, considering that bringing it up with my health teacher will do no good as she's simply regurgitating the info she's handed? Oh, and by the way; I picked up the November 11th issue of Sports Illustrated and it had a blurb in it about A.C. Green's sex life. Apparently, Mr. Green is no longer a virgin, and he lost his virginity...out of wedlock! (I can't wait to break this to my health teacher! :-D ) |

An abstinence only program was struck down in Louisiana recently because it was based on religion. (See this thread from a few months ago.) But it was pervasively religious. If your abstinence-only program avoids religion, it might be hard to challenge it, especially after the last election

There has been continuing news coverage of Wake County, North Carolina's School Board and meetings and stuff because they put to a vote whether or not to include more info about homosexuality, masturbation, and birth control in the existing abstinence-only sex ed program. I was really disgusted when I saw some of the people speak at the meeting, talking about religion even though it was the public school system, but I do believe that on election day, the new program was approved by voters. So I'm thinking--since it was a county issue--if you got parents (or maybe even enough students??) at School Board meetings for your county, you could start something that might get the current crud changed. It more than likely wouldn't happen before you were out of school, but it could pave the way for those who come after you.

Like when we did a role play activity, I was a advice columnist and we were given situations about pregnancy I was given one on a girl that is pregnant and the father doesn't want anything to do with her. I told her to get proof that he is the father and get child support, or an abortion. In class we were told the negative sides to getting an abortion, emotions etc. And the teacher just gave me a funny look and and my classmates said that I am so cruel and it's murder etc. |

The good news is that you seem literate enough to research subjects that interest you on your own. You're wise enough to know that the "Just Say No" campaign regarding sex is based on xian superstition. I feel bad for other students without resources or savvy.
I like the suggestion about bringing up discussion topics on issues not raised in class. Perhaps you can also correct some misinformation your teacher brings up, too. And if it all gets to frustrating, you can always do what I did in high school: hang out in the boys' locker room giving blowjobs--it was a great sex education and I learned so much. -Jerry |

I read their *snort* program evaluation from Northwestern University.
The evaluation is useless; it performed no follow-up on the students and no comparisons were made with a control group. Anybody can ask questions about what people have learned and get positive responses, but will they put it into practice? It's doubtful. |
