Default New drug import bill - spreading socialism?

House Passes Drug Import Bill
Quote:
Some conservatives said the bill posed a hazard both to patient safety and the American way of life. Indiana Republican Mike Pence said it would allow importation of "price controls and socialism" from nations like Canada, France and Germany, which he called socialist.
I'm confused, I thought capitalism was supposed to foster competition and help bring prices down.

That's conservative republicans for you. He's trying to make this wonderful bill evil by associating it with Germany, Canada, and France. These "socialist" countries enacted policies that actually protect their citizens. We just can have that sort of thinking in the US.

Actually, there is some risk to allowing reimportation. It makes it easier for fake drugs to get into the pipeline.

Really? I'm a pharmacist and I doubt that there's any great danger there. The greatest danger is to the pocketbooks of the major pharmaceutical companies.

Reimportation means drugs can pass through more systems. The more systems you go through the more chance to pull a fast one. There's nothing special about drugs here--having a multitude of systems is a benefit for any crook.

If there were a single worldwide system for tracking drugs from production to the pharmacy then reimportation would be no greater risk.

Oh please, Loren. Like the risk of that is worth keeping affordable drugs from Americans.
