We pledge lifelong fidelity to each other... happy?
A hundred vague references to being in harmony/marriage before god do not mean we should buy a marriage license, wear white, throw rice, invite our relatives, be in a church, pay a minister to wed us. I read it as God knows all (like santa) and you had best be true to him. Besides, for every message regarding marriage in the bible, there is a story of sexual relations outside of marriage (even incest), and they aren't threatened with damnation, they are often heroes. The link posted contained a nice assortment of passages that support that particular school of thought's thesis. The bible is too inconsistent to claim this as the one true message. It was certainly a coherent and pleasing moral guide, but did not satisfy my suspicion that the concept of 'living in sin' is man-made, and only a recent addition to xianity. The part where god wants you to enjoy sex, but only when you say you love him and he says it's ok seems a bit... oh I don't know... controlling? Does religion want my freedom, no. It wants to control my thoughts and actions. And that is what her family seems to be trying to do with her. |

How about something along the lines of,
"I find it odd that you value a 3000 year old custom of those who's morales would not be tolerated in the modern world over the happiness of you <sister/daughter/counsin/etc>" Then it is simply a case of displaying examples of OT behavior that we wouldn't find appropriate. |

So, what would be my strongest counter to this accusation? Any other suggestions? I'm afraid that saying the bible is outdated will only inspire some sort of 'god's word is timeless' rant. And I suspect these people are the kind of dedicated christians that know very little about the old testament, so telling them of its endless folly would be just that.
I need a small gem that will quickly stymie them, and allow me to get through the meal. <img src="graemlins/banghead.gif" border="0" alt="[Bang Head]" /> |

Jason:
Ask them if a person who hasn't had a funeral is really dead. |
