Angry Pray For Eric Rudolph

Did anybody else see that disgusting picture on the front page of today's New York Times?

It is frightening to think that people would support a racist bomber like Rudolph in today's age. I was half minded to call up the restaurant and threaten to bomb them. (DISCLAIMER: I didn't, for the record. Nor am I suggesting that anyone actually do so. I'm just venting here, OK?)

Here's a quote from the restaurant manager: "Bless his heart."

WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU SAYING????????!!!!!!!! Tell that shit down here in Birmingham to the widow of the police officer he killed and the lady who was utterly disfigured by his despicable act.

It just goes to show how Fundamentalist Christianity still has a long way to go to prove that it has truly disavowed it's racist and violent past.

I'm travelling to North Carolina in a few months for vacation, but I will definitely not be eating at that restaurant.

A Life Marked by Loyalty, Self-Sufficiency and Deep Hatred

You can see the picture here:

Sympathy for Bombing Suspect May Cloud Search for Evidence

Quote:
PEACHTREE, N.C., June 1 — Betty Howard made many people happy today, and it was not for her daily special. Around noon, Mrs. Howard walked outside, glanced up at the sign in front of her diner and decided to change the lettering on the marquee from "Roast Turkey Baked Ham" to "Pray for Eric Rudolph."

"Bless his heart," Mrs. Howard said. "Eric needs our help."

Mrs. Howard said she was going to start an Eric Rudolph legal defense fund. Many customers have already said they would chip in.

. . .

With Mr. Rudolph in jail, the investigation is shifting to who in this rugged corner of western North Carolina might have helped him. And there may be no shortage of suspects.

While F.B.I. agents hacked their way through miles of rhododendron bushes today, trying to retrace the invisible man's footsteps, people here brazenly voiced their support of Mr. Rudolph, who is accused of bomb attacks that killed two bystanders and maimed dozens.
Sounds like they're all accessories after the fact, if not co-conspirators. But of course the romance of southern resistance to national authority is clouding their judgment.

No one in this area will say if they helped Mr. Rudolph hide. Aiding and abetting a fugitive is a federal offense.

But many said they would have.

"He was a man who stood for what he believed in," said Bo Newton, a short-order cook in Andrews. "If he came to my door, I would've given him food and never said a word."
Let's see. Kills people to stop abortions. White supremacist. Hates Jews. And gays.

But as long as he stands for what he believes in, it's OK?

It's just scary to realize how many people agree with what Rudolph did...

Indeed. I encounter so few people like that, it's easy to forget they exist -- for awhile, anyway. Reading some of the sympathy comments makes me ill. Where's the sympathy for the people he hurt and killed? Oh ya, collateral damage

Angry As someone who lives in NC...

...I want to cringe every time I see something like this.

Please, please remember that Peachtree is in one of the most backwoods and backwards parts of this state! The more urban and cosmopolitan cities (Raleigh, Winston, Chapel Hill, Durham, Greensboro) will have many, many residents who are as horrified as any of us at the neanderthal depths to which these bozos have sunk and the pall they cast on our beloved Old North State...

Bill -- you are absolutely right. Although I encountered a few people like that in Winston, they were by far the minority. Unfortunately, the bigots are the ones getting the press.

Ahhhh.... right-wing militiamen and the Christian Identity movement. Our domestic terrorists. If people were going around saying they supported bin Laden's perserverence, we would have a riot in the streets. I mean, go ahead, it's their right to free speech, but it sure doesn't make them look very good. The backwater parts of the South, the tiny uber-conservative towns of this nation are our own breeding grounds for fanaticism and ultra-right-wing idealogy. Make no mistake about it, Osama bin Laden and the Taliban are ultra-right-wing. Just right-wing about something else than American ultra-right-wingers. This crap scares me.

Cheer up, Bill. I know it's not the whole state and I'm familiar with much of the rest of North Carolina and know that it isn't as crazy as PeachTree. It's certainly no reflection of the rest of your fine state and I hope that you don't take offense - I certainly meant none in starting this thread. Living in Alabama, I realize that there are enough crazy fundies around here to embarass us all.

Now, here in Birmingham, today, Rudolph is sitting in Jail. My good friend, Doug Jones, former US Attorney at the time of the investigation, feels that he's built an air tight case. But it is likely that the Defense will try to move the case to some other locale - a locale that may be more sympathetic to Rudolph's white supremacists/anti-abortion views, and I fear jury nullification even here in Alabama.

If the trial is held in one of the big cities - such as Huntsville, Montgomery, or Mobile, Rudolph will have a tough go of it. I would suspect that is where it would be moved to, and not some outlying rural areas such as Jasper, Gadsden, Fort Payne or some other locale. If they do succeed in getting it moved, I hope it goes to Montgomery and they are assigned Justice Myron Thompson - the only African-American Federal Judge there. That would be ironic.

There's also my concern about Ashcroft. The decision to make this a capital case was done by Reno and the Clinton Administration. Will Ashcroft, who shares a lot of Rudolph's views about abortion not pursue the death penalty?

Whatever happens, it will make an interesting trial. I just read that David Luker's been appointed as his attorney. David represented one of the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombers recently. He lost that one to Doug Jones although it's still on appeal. Still, he's one of the foremost Defense attorneys in the state.

that's the last thing we need, which is nut jobs with support. look at people like Osama Bin Laden and to a lesser extent, Charles Manson. Often times these types of people work alone, and still pose a huge threat. When these people have followers, then there would be serious trouble. When these people control armies, then prepare for an all out war.

Do these people forget that ERR is suspected of killing a police officer?
