Default "Here, here!" vs. "Hear, hear!"

I have noticed a few people using the 'here' version of this exclamation.

For your edification, "Hear, hear" is the original and still correct form. "Here, here" seems to have appeared because here and hear are homophones. Of course, if you are not interested in playing the 'language correctness' game, please feel free to ignore this post; I come in peace.

A few sites..

Also,

"Idiom:
hear, hear

Used to express approval.

Source: The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition

- from dictionary.com, search for "hear"

Further, if you search for "here" on dictionary.com, there is a distinct absence of 'here, here' idiom definitions.

Thanks for reading

...which raises the question-- what can the phrase "There, there...." mean? As in, "There, there.....everything will be OK..."

Yeah, all those people that always tell me it's "hear, hear" are so misguided, it drives me nuts. I mean...

huh? Ohhhhhh...uhh...right...I'll just be hiding under a rock now.

Maybe "There, there" is some kind of psychological transference thing -- "visualize your safe place, take your anger/sorrow/etc., and put it there, there." Looking back at what I just wrote, however, I have to admit that even as amateurish etymologies (?) go, that's pretty strained.

Dont' forget that American BS of "I could care less" when it should be "I couldn't care less" to express complete indifference.

To date, I have never ever seen a British person screw this up...

Somebody please come up with a rational explanation why Americans should mangle this phrase.
