I've decided to create a parody, I've chosen a name for my pastor (Lucilius Witz - I'm hoping that may give a bit of a clue that its a joke), now I need to find somewhere to have him live. So I want to put him in the most fundy state I can find - at the moment I've said Tenessee, but as I'm not American, I don't really know which state could be the worst
Thanks for your help,
You should pick Augusta, GA, birthplace of the Southern Baptist Convention. It's a decently wellknown city (The Masters) and is pretty conservative. Other than that, I wouldn't pick GA because the behemoth of Atlanta pretty much counters most of the Fundyness in the rest of the state.

If you could do a search of fundy news over the past 15 years I would wager that Indiana would win hands down. I have come across more close minded people in Indiana than anywhere else.

They led the nation in number of KKK members for a very long time and might still. I believe that they have the most churches per capita than any other state as well but I may be mistaken.

They also in their defense have more colleges and universities than any other state.

My son lives in Indiana and I think it should be in the running.

I have to vote for my state - South Carolina. It's the stronghold of the Christian Coalition and a bastion for Bible toting bigots. Plus, the "Christian Confederate-Americans" (that's really what they call themselves) are still fighting a war that's been over for almost a century and a half.

Not to mention that the insane state government down there is trying (and is probably going to succeed in these efforts) to mandate placement of the ten goddamn commandments in all government buildings and offices.

What a bunch of shit.

(Disclaimer due to violent tone of post: Not meant in any way against you personally, Howard, just your state's ridiculous legislation.)

Since you're looking to make a parody, what you really want are the stereotypes, fiar or otherwise:

The Appalacian states are a good pick if you want to throw in weird crap like snake handling, poison-drinking or chastity belts.

If you want to make them KKKers or Confederate sympathizers, nothing beats South Carolina.

Inbreeding? It's a running joke about West Virginia.

If you're looking for a "regular fundie" type of flavor, try any Deep South state except maybe Florida (while there are plenty of fundies people tend to think of Disney and Miami Beach when they think of this state.)

Rural Yankees (New England and northern New York) have the repuation of simply being out-of-touch; time forgot them as it marched on in the cities, so they may have odd religions, secretive in type. Mr. Lovecraft had a good deal to do with spreading this idea.

Again, these are only the impressions people have; they're often not especially fair, but it is a parody you're going for.

Good time to work in a word play:

Reintarnation: The unfortunate occourance of someone coming back as a hillbilly.

Nobody's mentioned Idaho yet. But I guess they (and Montana) are more "anti-government" than they are "religious fundamentalist."

We certainly have our fair share of fundies up here. Most are Pentecostal and Chruch of Christ that I have run into. Of course we do have the Mormons but I really don't think of them as fundies so much as a society.

The midwest seems to be the new hot bed for fundieism. They are certainly pushing alot of prayer and 10C's bills lately.

Well I've been to the majority of the states, and I think you are all wrong. If you really count Mormon's as fundies then Utah might be it. Otherwise I would have to say Oklahoma. You would be hard pressed to find a more bland, whitebread place than that. Hell, real porn is illegal. The softcore stuff on cinemax is all you can buy there. Last time I checked they didn't even sell full strength beer.

I live in Texas and while I have to admit that there are some real fundies here there are also some pretty open minded people. Houston is the fourth largest city in the US, it's a very metropolitan place. My congresswoman has a 100% rating on the ACLU scorecard. It wasn't too long ago that we had Ann Richards as a governer, and she is not fundie at all. Also Austin is one of the more liberal, openminded places I've been. Damn George Bush for giving us a bad name!

I've also spent some time in West Virginia, and while I have to admit that I hated the place, they do have all nude stripclubs that serve alcohol.( usually all nude places are dry, while places that serve alcohol are topless only ). I figure they can't be all that fundie if they allow drunken genital exposure.
