I found the whole thread fascinating. I’m going to have to visit now and then. Here’s the list of banned books. While it’s pleasant to note that Origin of Species wasn’t on it, I was surprised at some titles that were.

<a href="http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/People/spok/most-banned.html" target="_blank">http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/People/spok/most-banned.html</a>

Something else interesting:

quote:

You know what is funny? Public education was started so that it could make sure every child could read the Bible. Ironic, eh?

quote:

Why? Public education is quite successful in that regard. Literacy levels in the United States are very high, if not as high as they should be.

They do represent a marked improvement over the literacy levels 100 years ago.

As such, virtually every child is capable of picking up and reading a Bible.

Or did you mean public education was started to force children to read the Bible? I'd hope you didn't.
--------------------------------------------

So, there are sober, critical minds at work over there. As to the Evolution discussion, I found that relying on Behe and especially Ham a little disconcerting. But I also found the discussion on the goals of science excellent if less than ground-breaking.

Thanks for the read.

Looks like it was moved to the E/C forum. Poor Helen. The Galation is smart, polite, and very well educated on this subject. Helen's having her butt handed to her, and I don't even think she realizes it.

Yes, and they should all learn to read the Bible in the original Greek and Latin, if not Hebrew and Aramaic. Modern English translations are watered down travesties and no God-fearing fundie should trust 'em.

Heh, whether you knew it or not Sbaii, your opening sentence has two meanings:

"You know what is funny? Public education was started so that it could make sure every child could read the Bible. Ironic, eh?"...

...could be taken as a comment on literacy pushing people away from the religion directly, or as literacy pushing people to read the Bible, which pushes them away religion.

Either way its highly ironic, and I concur entirely.

I believe sbaii was simply quoting Helen. . . at least, that same sentence appears in her thread above. . .

Heh, I agree that we should read the bible in it's original language. I also support supplying bibles in public schools. I mean, how many of us deconverted after actually reading it?

Hey, I've only read 14 of those 50. I've got to start reading to see what's pissing everybody off.

Seems Roald Dahl is on somebody's black list. I loved his stuff as a kid!

I hate to snipe, but I don't think that's a great photo of Helen. Shiny.
