Post End Time Prophecies - the TRUTH

This is mostly for FastFalcon, but I wanted it in
a new thread in case any lurkers had tired of
following the other one.

A quick search in the net of "Failed Prophecies"
turned up this interesting site:

<a href="http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/millennium/false.html" target="_blank">Failed Prophecies</a>

FastFalcon, please read this and pay special note
to the link near the bottom, where they list
out all 73 failed end time prophecies of
the past....

The Morman denomination is such a joke as illustrated nicely by this (one of many listed failed prophecies)

DAVID SMITH WILL BE PRESIDENT AND KING: April 1844. Joseph Smith prophesies that his unborn child will be called David, and will be "president and king of Israel." (cited in Quinn p 644)

FULFILLMENT: The child was called David. However, he was never "president and king of Israel." He died in 1904, at the age of 60, having spent the last 27 years of his life in an insane asylum. He was a member of the Reorganized Church. His highest position in that church was counsellor to the president, but he never actually served as such.

Which is why most Christians don't do prophecy concerning Jesus' coming. We know he's coming but not when. We concern ourselves with prophecies dealing with with a growing shadow of evil (men being lovers of self and money). Just take a look at some of the news (esp the fact that kids are being treated like criminals in zero-tolerance schools).

Yes, that's something new. They never had that in the Biblical days.

A "growing shadow of evil."

What a remarkably detailed prophecy! No wonder you believe!

F*ckin' hell...

Fastfalcon: Just wanted to let you know I agree completely with you on this point. Zero tolerance is zero judgment and zero use of brain.

However, that is off-topic. Pardon the interruption.

Fastfalcon:

Jesus (according to Revelation 22:20) prophesied concerning his own coming. "Behold I am coming soon." So Christians do supposedly know when his return will be: When will he come? "Soon, he promised."

Do you think Jesus had some other meaning for "soon" than what is found in a dictionary? If so, why didn't he use a more accurate term?

If not, why this 2000-year delay after the gospel period? 2000 years does not seems like "soon," as anyone actually uses that word. What do you mean whenever you say "soon," outside the context of Jesus' prophesied return?

Jesus has made a mistake here, in using the word "soon" with regard to his prophesied return.

That, or Revelation's author must have made a mistake (or, a worse implication: he made it all up) by putting those words in Jesus' mouth; perhaps Jesus did not promise to return soon, and this would all get cleared up as soon as Christians stopped repeating this mistakenly attributed promise.

(Heck, perhaps he didn't actually promise to return at all, but his devoted followers just really, really wanted him to...)

What's the most reasonable interpretation of this? How many years is too many years for "soon" to be both a meaningful and accurate term? Is Revelation 22:20 accurate?

Or is it, as it appears to be, a false prophecy?
