This is a quick side note, related to some of the terms in this post.

I was shopping the other day when I overheard several people behind me talking. One said to the other, "That stupid N... didn't know what he was talking about." Now living in Kansas, I expected to see two rednecks from outside of Kansas City talking when I turned around. However, it was two African-American women in their mid-twenties. They continued their conversation behind me with 5 similar references to each other and people they know.

My problem is this; I never use this term (or related derogatory term) to define anyone. However, if my 3 year old was with me that day, she could have picked up a new term to share at daycare, grandmas, or the mall. Do you think if she shared this term at any other time, that anyone would associate her learning it's improper use from two African-American women? It would be more likely that people would associate her knowledge of the term with my family or me because the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, right?

I have a problem with the flippant use of derogatory terminology by the same people who do not want that terminology applied to them by others. They run the risk of giving impressionable young minds a context to use these terms that should be unacceptable to everyone. I would be absolutely mortified if my 3 year old were to speak to any of the African-American teachers or classmates in her daycare the way these two women were speaking.

Sorry to steal this thread.

Not that I’d want to be, but if given the choice I’d choose the English as colonialists over the Portuguese or the Spaniards or the Dutch. (italics mine - &#8364 )
Oi! What did we do, echidna? We weren't in it because of some "White Man's Burden", we were in it for the money.

Blaming christianity for such atrocities is as stupid as blaming atheism for Stalin.

Moon:

"On Flinders Island Robinson was determined to civilize and Christianize the survivors. His settlement--at a windy site with little fresh water--was run like a jail. Children were separated from parents to facilitate the work of civilizing them. The regimental daily schedule included Bible reading, hymn singing, and inspection of beds and dishes for cleanness and neatness. However, the jail diet caused malnutrition, which combined with illness to make the natives die. Few infants survived more than a few weeks. The government reduced expenditures in the hope that the native would die out. By 1869 only Truganini, one other woman, and one man remained alive."

Atheism is a non-belief in god.

There is no creed nor ideology involved with atheism.

Perhaps you refer to those terrorists, like Robinson, who must have 'hijacked' christianity and committed the atrocities listed.

In that case, you're an apologist for the delusional.
