Thanks for the info, Marduck. I watched, enjoyed, and even learned something.

This show seems to be the first in a new History Channel series called "Mysteries of the Ancient World" Tuesdays at 8 pm.

That's a pretty big topic for one show. Who did they interview, and what did they decide in answering their own question?

For those interested in pursuing this question further there are a number of very good books on the subject, and some are very reasonably priced.

The book by the same name, Who Wrote the Bible? by Richard Elliot Friedman is actually a pretty good of who wrote the Pentateuch/Torah (Genesis to Deuteronomy), as well as the history books (Judges to 2 Kings). I enjoyed the read, especially his straight forward presentation on the JEPD theory. I think he goes beyond the evidence at times, and gets excessively speculative, but such is the nature of popular books, even those written by scholars.

I recommend it highly to sceptic and Christian alike. I think everyone could learn from it.

Peace,

Nomad

Thanks for the book recommendation, Nomad. Are there any online resources that provide a comparable treatment of this subject? I have recently become interested in this subject through my discussions with posters at the Baptist Board.

Yes it is, it was a 3 hour show and Freidman was the most frequently interviewd guest, along with a half dozen others whos names I forget. They went mostly with the P J E D authorship starting shortly after Solomon, OT wise anyway, with the idea that Barruch (?) wrote Deuteronomy and parts of other books. Crossan was one of those speaking on the NT.
I watched this the first time it was on a few months ago, not last week, so my memories are a little fuzzy on the guests.

JP, there are many online sources for this, AKA the Documentary Hypothesis. Simply searching that term in your favorite web search program will bring up many sites:

The Fundie sites are really funny:

Hmm, under #4 the author uses WordPerfect to gather statistics about his writing, "One before church and the other after church on the same day." After church his writing dropped more than three grade levels!

Coincidence???
