Representation of the non-religious
Watching this whole debate open up, get messy and start to crumble has made me get thinking about our strength (or lack of it) in the public arena. I am not just talking about the US - even in more secular countries, freethinkers as a whole can be treated with something approaching derision, despite the fact that, with deism and baha'ism, we are the fastest growing religious viewpoint in the world.
And I am thinking something needs to be done. The march in DC is a good start, maybe even auspiciously timed, but the ball must keep rolling. There needs to be a vision. There needs to be unanimity. African-Americans managed it, women managed it - I really feel it is our turn next. But - I don't think that our organisations are currently living up to this. The ACLU has but religious freedoms on the back burner. American Atheists do not command the power that they did. Even II, bless it, is not going to rock the system as much as it deserves. So what is to be done? That question is my challenge to you - the way forward, however the decision is made. |
