Question Any Atheists ever watch the 700 Club

Oh my, what a lovely television show. Pat Robertson saving people from the evils of homosexuality, showing how most atheists are either drunks or prostitutes that can only go clean if they convert to Christianity, praying for. . .wait a sec this show sucks! Oy Muchachos! This is what I'm talkin about when I say evil Christianity. This post really has no point to other than to rant how bad that show is, so I'm gonna cut it off there.

He's a bigoted jerk. I watch once in awhile but I just can't get passed a few minutes at a time. I can actually feel my brain cells dying after 5 minutes.

I can't figure out who he hates more, Jews or Atheists. He was on a kick the other day that Jesus is the only way to God and the Jews just have it all wrong. They just don't understand.

What a Moron.

Talking

The usual laugh-a-minute one was Jack van Impe Presents (as in his buttocks?) at least until he got off onto the Pledge controversy . Recently he spent half his show talking about UFOs! I rarely watch the ones that focus mostly on "morality"....rather little to laugh about, since that word mostly means hate in that context.

If nothing else is on, I'll watch it and shake my head in amazed horror at those people. Pat Robertson is an idiot, and as someone pointed out in another recent thread, an opportunist first and foremost. Why anyone would take him seriously is a mystery to me.

For a brief day back in 1980 this maroon was the front-running GOP candidate for President. The mainstream press was totally incompetent to report on him. Then Gerry Straub and a few other ex-members of Robertson's crew presented the press with a videotape of Robertson in an unguarded moment talking about a few of his crazier ideas, such as the "Holy Ghost-inspired policemen"---Christian men who would be empowered to arrest people that the HG tells them are about to commit a crime. At that point the reporters knew who they were dealing with.

But I don't think Robertson is anti-semitic, just patronizing toward the Jews. As are all Christian millennialists, who expect the Jews to be converted when the Messiah comes back.

Along those lines, I too saw Van Impe's rant about UFO's. If anybody ccould follow any of those rambling sentences of his, I think they'd have come to the conclusion the man is certifiably nuts. I was watching only to confirm my own prophecy, namely that he would prominently feature the Russia/Iraq trade agreement on the show. I was wrong, so I guess I go where all failed prophets go---to the rationalization room for retooling. I just had the date wrong. The trade deal was signed on Friday, too late for the prophet Van Impe to foresee. I still bet he features it on next week's show.

No, QI, but I occasionally listen to Christian Talk Radio.

I heard a preacher today talking about how the lyrics to a pop song that said "what you believe is true" reflect the sort of moral subjectivism that has decayed our country.

I guess he believes that what he believes isn't true...?

The scary part is thinking about what would be considered a crime in his biblically based country.

I've noticed that there tend to be two types of fundimentalist christians when it comes to Jews. One group, like you said, are patronizing, expecting mass conversion when the Second Comming occurs. The second kind truly believe the whole "Jews are God's chosen people" stuff, and take it very seriously, sometimes bordering on worship of Israel and anything associated with it. I had a teacher who was sort of like the second type.

I think you got some of your facts wrong. Pat ran for the GOP nomination in 1988 not 1980. Also, he was never was a frontrunner just a sideshow. Bush Sr. and Viagra man were the main contenders He did win the Iowa Straw Poll but got little support in the primaries.

Anyway, I watch the 700 nutclub on occasion because I am curious about the fundy mindset (or lack there of)
The best part of the show is the segment called “Bring it on“ where Pat answers emails from people. Of course 90% of the questions are from women who want to get a divorce without upsetting Jesus. A couple of weeks ago Pat was dissing the Godless march on Washington, suggesting that it should be held in a phonebooth.

There's nothing "extreme" about this viewpoint, though. (Well, no moreso than any Christianity is extreme.) I would expect most Christians to have exactly the same opinion. Otherwise why bother to be Christian? The whole point is that Christianity is true, and all the other dudes (Jews, Atheists, Muslims, Hindus, etc.) "have it all wrong."

Thumbs up

I watch it occasionally and look forward to the spectacle of Pat Robertson attempting to drag four hundred million dollars through the eye of a needle.
