You guys really seem to be on to something. If what you're saying is true, Christianity is mired in hopeless contradiction, with its overarching mandate in fundamental conflict with its primary goal.

With the means and the ends so opposed to each other, Christians would be immobilized and Christianity doomed. It's either obey God to the damnation of souls, or disobey Him to your own damnation.

No wonder Christians are so confused and irrational. This type of thing will cause psychosis!

The only problem of course would be the minor consideration that what you're saying is not what the Bible or historic Christianity actually teaches. But no need to let that little fact stop your ranting. 'Burn the straw man. Burn the straw man. See how quickly it's consumed. Burn the.....'

....oh well, have fun.

Peace

indeed! If you had read the first post, you would have realized that this thread is meant to counter an apologetics claim made by Xians!!! Namely, that those who have not heard will not be damned. Whether or not this is Biblically/historically supported is besides the point. In fact, if what you say is true, then the defense in question is made even weaker!

But don't let this fact get in the way of your rambling.

To take this even further, if not hearing the gospel assures salvation, then why the Christ story in the first place? If it was necessary for Christ to die to save the world from sin, then could he have not come to some remote corner of the world (well, he did do that) and die quietly, without proclaiming to be god and starting the xian religion? Why all the publicity? Without it, no one would have heard the gospel, and everyone would have been saved!

It sure is silly if we are trying to save ourselves from God. But what if we have to save ourselves from ourselves?

I'll bite. And why would we need to do that?

Haven't you noticed that we have destructive tendencies?

This is one of those times where I have more respect for the fundies than the liberal Christians. I've seen fundies fight against the popular misconception that, "If you are a good person, you'll get into heaven, no matter what religion you are." So, at least the fundies are being consistent on this point.

NOTHING mankind does to itself, whether we can save ourselves from it or not, can compare to being throw in a lake of fire for eternity. We could hack each other up and smoke the remains in nuclear powered crack pipes, and it would still pale in comparison to eternal torment.

Given the choice and the power to make that decision (allow finite human-caused suffering now vs eternal god-caused suffering later), it makes no sense to say that christ was sent to save us from ourselves. Unless, of course, god WANTS some people to go to hell.
