Default Aaaand it's Jihad time!

NAJAF, Iraq (Reuters) - Religious leaders of both Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims said on Friday Iraqis were becoming increasingly angry at the presence of U.S.-led troops in their country and one warned holy war could be declared in six months. U.S. forces in Iraq (news - web sites) are already facing between 10 and 25 attacks a day, according to the general who led the war that ousted Saddam Hussein (news - web sites).

U.S. General Tommy Franks told U.S. lawmakers on Friday American soldiers had noticed assailants were now using weapons such as mortars rather than just small arms and grenades. In the Shi'ite holy city of Najaf, 100 miles south of Baghdad, a religious leader of Iraq's majority Shi'ite Muslims, said Shi'ites could turn against U.S.-led forces if they were not given political compensation after decades of persecution under Saddam.
Okay, who didn't see this shit coming down the pipe?

Are you so sure? Remember, next year is an election year. Nothing better to rally support behind a president than a good old fashioned war over moral values...

If we're still fighting a war in Iraq over a year after it was officially declared over, then Bush is going to be in big trouble come election time.

Maybe this is just Phase One* of the Bush Reelection Project*. After pissing the whole Middle East off, there are bound to be other attacks that we have to get involved in, bumping up the approval rates again in time. Or at a minimum, allowing the supposed suspension of elections.

* or Phase Two, if you subscribe to 9-11 being a secret Bush plan to provide motivation for lashing out.

** technically you can't reelect if there was no first election won, but you know what I mean.

Is this Shock and Awe, in that we're shocked and awed at how the Iraqi people aren't happy with our presence?

I liked Jon Stewart's take on Shock and Awe.

We were all shocked when it wasn't very impressive, and when we realized that was it, we said, "awwww."

If he technically didn't win the last election, would he then "technically" be allowed to be (horror) properly elected *two* more terms instead of one? Could such a case be made by the republicans, come year 2008 (for instance)?

I think that these religous leaders may find it a bit different to delcare a Jihad against America while, in a country not freindly to America than, to make such a declaration while, there are American troops on the scene.

Considering that resistance has graduated from small arms to mortar fire, it may not be as hard as you think.

The general population is already getting tired of the losses. Why else would there be a push to get NATO and the UN involved? To bad none of our coalition have troops available at this time.
