Ok this is sort of off-topic but. . .
Why do people (especially theists) think that porn is immoral, yet watching animals have sex at zoos, or on the discovery channel, or on the family farm is perfectly acceptable? ?? scigirl |

To answer the original question. . .
I don't think porn is bad per se (unless it's with children, rape, etc). But, when I think of the exploitation of the people who make the pornos, it really grosses me out. I don't know what you would tell your daughters. Most girls, IMO, will look at porn out of curiosity but really don't get into it that much. So, I guess just be there to answer questions. I agree with you --I don't want my (theoretical) kids to be ashamed of sex or their bodies, but I do want them to be responsible and avoid diseases, pregnancy, etc. Probably, whether or not they look at porn is irrelevant to how they will handle their real sex life, but who knows. scigirl |

Don't ever give your child porn. Let him completely look at it on his own. My dad offered me porn. I was so used to stealing it from him, that it took the fun out of it. This was fairly recent. Kind of a coincidence that this forum began right around now.

My biggest complaint with teen boys veiwing porn is that it seems to give them the wrong idea about the actual act and what women enjoy. I don't think I would GIVE a kid porn, but I wouldn't make a big deal of it as long as they don't seem interested in rape scenarios, child porn, etc. I also would worry about a teen viewing BDSM which is fine for consenting adults, but may be confusing for a young person
Sorry little fellas, not all women moan and thrash about if you touch their nipples and there is this thing called the clitoris you need to learn about and I have never known anyone who screwed a delivery or repairman and most women's breasts do not stand straight up when they lie on their back |

I don't believe in giving free access of porn to your teenagers. The level of explicitness of porn can affect people differently. For the kid not mentally prepared to suddenly being handed down to him (and from a parent!) overly explicit porn can be just a bit too much, not to mention embarrasing.
OTOH I don't believe in censoring porn either. I think each kid will search for the porn that he/she finds appealing - like any adult. A person who is not mentally ready to look at what somebody else considers porn will simply find disgusting and reject it. |

Allow me to put my devil's advocate hat on. Women certainly can be thought of as objects; sex objects. Assuming that one agrees to the idea that it is still a man's domain, women actually think that it [sex] makes them feel wanted and needed, and part of this/his domain. So other than satisfying a need to 'get-off' and making babies, why should a man think differently and go beyond the objective goals for mating?
All of that makes me think of the goals of evolution. If there is a need to dominate in the jungle along with the associated needs to mate, what is the other 'purpose' and/or how should women present themselves otherwise? Don't be shocked, many people believe this but don't explicitly say so. Some women are perfectly happy sitting at home getting screwed and making babies living in a man's world. And, many women want/enjoy sex/masturbation as much if not more than many men, it's just that they have to be careful, if you know what I mean here. Daily talk show's seem to support this... Thoughts? walrus |

My own experience was somewhat different from what Lady Shea describes.
The videos and magazines I had access to actually taught me where the clitoris is to be found and what one might do with it once you find it. My wife certainly appreciates that I had some idea of what I was doing the first time... |

My point is that I don't think that's where we are now (at least in Western culture). Most women at least want the CHOICE of whether to be sex objects or not. I think a significant number of men (if not the majority) want a meaningful relationship with a companion as well as a sex slave. Frequent viewing of pornography can produce attitudes in a male that run counter to all of that - and ultimately can leave the man unhappy and alone later in life, of banging his head against the wall of disfunctional relationships for all his life. That's not what I'd want for my kid, which is what the OP is really getting at. Jamie |

Jamie!
Unless I misunderstood your definition of moral imperative, it seems that 'objectivism' would be quite compatable with the universal desire to get-off. Your argument kind of remoinds me of FW & D. The illusion of free-will translates into that choice, in the end, being determined by human nature. And its human nature to find a mate to get-off with. So, 'evolution' seems to serve a purpose in making babies (nothing more). I would think your views relative to science and free thinking would support that purpose. Otherwise your views seem confusing. Why is it so important not to be alone? Walrus |
