Post Free Speech for High Schoolers

From the newswire:

<a href="http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=573&ncid=757&e=4&u=/nm/20020426/od_nm/banner_dc_1" target="_blank">Bong hits 4 Jesus</a>

The high school kid was suspended for holding up a banner saying "bong hits 4 Jesus" during the Olympic Torch Relay in Juneau. (I'm not sure what this actually means, but it sure sounds like a challenge to authority.) It was not on school property, but the kids had been released from class to pack the crowd. The basis of his suspension was the school's anti-drug policy, but -

Quote:
According to the lawsuit, Morse grabbed the banner out of Frederick's hands, and later doubled his five-day suspension when, during a meeting with her, he quoted one of Thomas Jefferson's statements about free speech.

One of the articles I read on it claimed it was a common slang phrase among snowboarders in the area.

If school let them out early for the parade, and school administrators or faculty were there, and may have been more like a field trip where they were still legally "in school" and under their supervision.

Was he taking drugs at the time? Otherwise, I don't see how he violated the anti-drug policy.

Obviously, by mentioning drugs and implicitly endorsing them. It would probably violate the anti-drug policy to wear a t-shirt with that slogan on it to school.

My question is how Jesus enters into it - does it make it worse (sacrilege) in the teacher's eye?

No, Toto, it wasn't sacrilege. In fact, there isn't much of a church/state issue here at all. It was purely a question of the school's anti-drug policy, and whether it covers pro-drug speech at off-campus events.

I'll tell ya, I had to report this story on the air last week. It's not often I say the words "Bong hits for Jesus" -- repeatedly -- in the line of duty.

Hmm, I should think that the whole Jesus concept originated with a few bong hits...

The kid should just say he meant bong as in a deep ringing sound, as of a bell.
