Oh I just knew that if I sat on the fence I'd get in trouble

You say you work for a game developer and GTA:VC is closer to depicting the killing or real humans than just about any other game you know? You must be new to this industry.
Only 10 years or so. Mostly console development, though. It's hard to get too realistic on PSX. PS2/XBox is really the first step towards photorealism.

And you actually believe the replacement of red blood with white/green would actually elevate GTA3 to a higher moral plane?
For some reason they do in Germany... point is, the industry has shied away from graphic representations for a while because the perception has been that an '18' certificate just restricts sales. I've actually worked on a photorealistic console game (which never got finished, sadly) where we were told to downplay gore by marketing and production because of potential certification.

As far as what I believe, I am not what you I think you think I think I am not anti-GTA:VC (or whatever). I am of the opinion that there may be a case to answer and that we can't afford to be as dismissive just because gore is cool, or even visually possible. Certainly, I believe VC pushes the envelope on console (and as you rightly say, State of Emergency - by the same developer, Rockstar).

I have to second this. There are many games with more realistic killing.

Do you honsetly think red blood instead of "green or white" is a new thing? I can't even remember the last time I played a game with green blood. geez

Arrow ponders bringing up Italian-American gang stereotypes in games.... Nah.

I remember back when they were recolorizing blood. That was a hoot.

They were recolorizing, by the way. The games came from Japan (where 90% of video games come from) with red pixels. I would also add that many DID have human enemies: Many were changed to "robots," "zombies," etc. to fit American regulations. I find it difficult to believe that violent games cause American kids to turn into amoral psychopaths simply because Japan gets these games, they get more games that we don't get, and AFAIK they don't have the ratings system that we do. But I don't hear about them going around shooting up their schools or raping/killing prostitutes. (Japan anti-gun laws, notwithstanding)

Since these games are so subversive, do you think that a game that glorifies tap-dancing would cause kids to have tap-dancing tendencies? That could be interesting. Maybe we need to get together and create an atheist video game that allows you to stop believing in God for fun and profit.

I imagine the anti-video game conservatives would have a field day with that one.

I couldn't figure out a way to work Bubble Bobble into this one. Sorry. A winner is you!

maybe they should edit the game so the prostitutes turn into pieces of fruit when you kill them?

Jeezus H. Christ.

I'm a total Vice City addict and sexual assault is the least of my worries. I like to buy a semi-automatic, sniper rifle, rocket launcher and assault rifle, load up on ammo and kill dozens of innocent civilians.

Surely that's FAR worse that murdering the odd hooker.

Sometimes I even like to get my hands on an assault helicopter and murder HUNDREDS of innocent civilialians, policemen and soldiers.

My stats page says that I've killed over 4000 people so far. And I've never deliberately killed a hooker. Surely I'm fucked up beyond belief.

Just a thought.

If there were male hookers that you could have sex with and kill, would it make the game any less or more moral?

Arrow noticed something today

You ever notice that Vice City (and Liberty City for that matter) doesn't seem to have any High Schools? What's up with that? I asked my friend that owns the game if there were any and he looked up at me in horror from where he was mowing down cops with an uzi.

Sheesh, ask a simple question....

I've been playing Medal of Honor online for the past month. It's a WWII game where you can join either the Allies or Axis and fight it out online. For the life of me, I cannot bring myself to join the Axis. I log on as an American or Brit and kill as many Germans as I can, although at my age (54) I am getting wasted every 15 seconds or so, probably by the younger players who have grown up on computer/video games. The only really annoying thing I have encountered is when some asshole starts shooting soldiers on his own side. I really hate that! I have often wondered if some of the players playing Germans are actually Germans??

Irrespective, it's a blast to play.

Dinosaurs that blow bubbles.

And the SNES was the best motherfucking game system, ever. Period.
You look in to the Game Boy Advance?

Same processor, and they are releasing a lot of the old SNES titles on it.
