Default Video Game Golden Age? and GTA Vice City

I was visiting my family over the holidays and happened to play what the Christian Right deems as the most evil game in the history of the world, Grand Theft Auto , Vice City. People like Medved claimed how it glorified being a mobster and killing people. How it was so bad to the world as an influence.

After watching someone play it as a demo over the holidays my only reaction to that is, what were they smoking? Actually they must have been doing hallucinagens (sp? don't use them ). That game is a laugh riot. Stealing a car is too easy and the whole killing people is not only rather non-graphic as in calling Saving Private Ryan in Normandy graphic, but it is absolutely silly violence. Personally, the bit I played, I liked driving people over in my car and outrunning the police.

From what I played, the game seemed simple and rather boring after a while, not really a great game. However, to say that this is leading children to crime is probably one of the largest overstatements in the history of overstatements (please note the irony of my last statement )

*Please excuse the lateness of this comment on the game. I've got a Genesis and SNES at home, well behind the times. Though I do have and have beaten Return to Castle Wolfenstein, an excellent game.

Off topic: don't feel bad about only owning an SNES and a Genesis. That was the Golden Age.

Well, you *can* use hookers to increase your life, then beat them to death and steal your money back. That's pretty immoral I suppose.

I love old Nintendo games! I downloaded an NES emulator last year just so I could play Dragon Warrior again.

I've also noticed that games nowadays are a lot tougher than before. I remember thinking when I was young that the original Super Mario Brothers was a tough game, and a couple of days ago, I watched my sister get half way through the game in about 15 minutes. Now I don't even bat an eye when it takes two or three hours to get through just the first level on a typical game.

Ah, the memories...

The most immoral stuff exists on the Christian networks. The killing of cyber prostitutes is nothing compared to what I want to do to the people who prostitute their vision of morality on TV.

Those people couldn't come up with an original thought to save their hopeless souls. And the vision I have of the people buying what those morality prostitutes are selling, is more sickening than anything they can come up with in a video game.

Personally I like Gran Turismo 3. Don't care for the GTA series.

You kids these days...

The real golden age was back when I had an Atari 400.

As for GTA, I have not played it. I heard it was well worth it, a lot of fun, etc. I have my doubts as to the validity of the calims that these games are ruining anyone.
We were all ruined to begin with...

I would say playstation was seriously the golden age. I know its cool to say the oldest stuff is the best. But NES games were mostly pretty boring if you go back and play them. And Atari games were shit.

Sega was good shit though.

Once again, people are under the assumption that toning down the pretend violence will in some way prevent the real violence (thank you, Mr. Carlin). It applies to morality as well. Games like GTA:VC provide a nice outlet for the Ego's anxiety, I suppose. Better to plunder and pillage in a video game (and get your inpulses out that way) than in a shopping mall. Bah.

I say have sex with your hookers, kill them to get your money back, and be merry...For tomorrow we die.

And dammit, the SNES and Genesis were the golden age...For those of us who favor RPG's, anyway.
