We know that large fissures can open up in the earth’s crust at any time, and we also know that everyone suffers a bout of acute embarrassment at some time or other. So what if earthquakes are actually caused by people with extraordinary parakinetic powers who suddenly realise they have left home without their trousers? The fact that the earth swallows them up would remove all the causal evidence, including the evidence that such people exist. Be fair. It’s as plausible as some bible stories.
