Of course, there would be a temptation to beg for mercy if the threat of eternal hellfire were real. But I don't think that just because the temptation is there means that someone would succumb to it, no more than every person can be broken by torture.

And if what a person had to do to avoid hellfire was even more repugnant- such as worshipping a God who would torture people who didn't believe in him- then I like to think that I would stand up to the God and laugh at him.

Actually, the Bible states that every knee shall bow and every mouth shall confess that Jesus is Lord. Just seeing him in all his glory and splendor would be enough for you to do that.

I'd point to Fastfalcon and say, "Wherever this one's going, please direct me elsewhere."

Your little feathers will be all burnt and then you may say to yourself, "Gee maybe this god is not as merciful as I thought......OH, that's right, it was all in the bible, so why am I shocked for being thown in hell?"

If I were not saved then the story would go somewhat like this:
Jesus: So, you have arrived to be judged.
Me: Yyes ssir. (knee bowing) You are the Lord.
Jesus: Let's see your life.
Pictures form of my life from birth to death. my being a baby, growing up, some sinning, reaching adulthood, reaching old age, dying.
Jesus: Hmmm, nowhere in your life did you serve Me or help My cause. You've helped old people when you were a teen, you worked with animals and helped children grow up, but you never came to me to be saved. Now let's see the Book of Life.
Jesus looks through the Book of Life but did not find my name.
Jesus: (sad) I'm sorry, I do not see your name in the Book. You did not come to Me to be saved, so here is where you will go for eternity.
He weeps and opens the door to the Lake of Fire. Weeping and gnashing of teeth sounds come out. I enter and cry for all eternity.

Lost Falcon,

You are making me laugh so hard I cannot eat my lunch! HA HA HA HA! LOL!

Your example is perfectly what we are talking about. The nice guy who helped elders and children is being thrown into the fire? Amazing!

If I am saved, as I am sure I am, the the story would be different:
Jesus: Come and be judged.
Me: Lord, have I served your cause? (knee bowing) You ae the Lord.
Jesus: We'll see.
Pictures form of my life, from birth to death. at Feb 15, 2002, the pictures stop as I see myself praying the sinner's prayer.
Jesus: (weeps in happiness) Here, you have asked Me for salvation. You are now eligible to enter heaven. However, I still need to judge you to see what rewards you get.
Me: Yes sir!
Jesus resumes the pictures of my life. I see myself preaching to people, bringing some of them to Jesus, helping the poor, volunteering for Aquarium duty (offstory: which I am doing now), teaching children about Jesus, being mocked and spat on by atheists, stumbling many times but Jesus helped me through, growing in my faith, etc.
Jesus: You get the main reward of being with Me for all eternity plus (whatever I get/desire). Just ask. Oh, and here is your white robe. It has been cleaned of your sins. You and your sins are now separated as far the east and the west are.
Me: Thank you, O Lord! Amen!
THE END.
