There was a thread on the process some time ago, but I can't find it for the life of me. I will keep looking. Meanwhile, I believe this thread is better suited to GRD.

What Godless Dave said!

I would call the Church you are a former member of an ask to have your name removed from the mailing list.

Found it! I swear the search function is my god. (Hey, it's at least as reliable as the xian one.)

Since it's a pre-vB thread and the formatting is cringeworthy, here are the salient links posted in the OP and further down:

Default how to GET OUT

Write to the Bishop of the RC Diocese in which you live (Find Diocesan address in local phone Book white pages probably at "Diocese of...."); and mail your letter to the "Chancery" . If you can't find this: walk around to your nearest Catholic chuch rectory, or go to a Mass at the church building itself; and ask the priest at the Rectory; or the priest at the Mass to tell you the BISHOP's official address.
Write a short (snail-mail) letter in your own handwriting, or type it if you prefer.... mention the diocese name & parish & approxinmate date, if you know those, where you were originally baptised, or married IN THE CHURCH. These will help them to connect you so as to disconnect you.
Tell the Bishop ("dear Bishop N.....") that this letter 's purpose is to separate you now & forever from the Roman Catholic sect & from its laws & teachings, which you here repudiate. It wd be desirable, probably, to have your letter witnessed by two people (include their addresses) and notarized (by any old Notary Public.). *Be sure to keep a photocopy or several for your own permanent records.* If the Bishop in question has any sense at all, he, or one of his minions (heh heh) will get back to you about this.
Undoubtedly there are other ways of getting-out from the RC sect; but this is probably one of the simpler & more easily-effected ones. Abe

This kind of point has been bugging me since my son's baptism. The pastor said something about getting records sent if you went to another church or something. I believe I'm still listed at my parent's church as an inactive member (haven't been, for service anyway, since probably '89, with the exception of my sister's wedding). I've been considering a letter letting them know that I no longer wish to be counted as a member (inactive or otherwise) of that church.

Hmm. I haven't really considered how they manage their records. Surely they remove people from the records once people die, else Catholicism would have an incredibly overinflated membership. The best way to know which members die is to have each church (or at least each diocese) keep records of this. If they remove you from the membership after you die, then perhaps they can remove you from the membership by your own request.

Of course they probably consider dead people to be "inactive members" anyway. :banghead: Somehow that really wouldn't surprise me. Anyway, it's worth a shot I suppose.

But to have been a Catholic leaves in imprint on your soul and would you not have to mail God to have this removed? Around here we don't get mail from the Church and I don't think they have an active up-to-date mailing list.

Hi pilaar-

I just entered the Church, and you are just exiting. Heh.

Do you mind me asking why you left?

Hi PaladInChrist (does that mean soldier in christ?)

I can't answer for pilaar but for beginners you might try reading some of the articles here http://www.infidels.org/library/index.shtml to get an idea of why so many here are leaving or have left their churches...

Good luck.

I'm just guessing, but maybe she objects to some old geezer trying to make her feel guilty for using birth control.
