Walls at Jericho?
Some sources state that there were big walls at Jericho that came tumbling down, while others state such never existed....
What's the current archaeological POV on this? |

Well the walls were destroyed twice: Once c.2400 BCE and a second time c.1450 BCE. The problem is, while the 1450 BCE date could fit nicely with Biblical chronology, everything we know about Canaan points to it being under Egyptian hegemony at this time, and we do know a lot about this period (known sometimes as the "Amarna Age" after a huge amount of tablets found at Tell el-Amarna). These document internal bickerings between Canaanite rulers, all reported to Pharoah Akhenaten (I think) by the rulers themselves. Despite the huge number of tablets, no one seems to have noticed two million Israelites plundering Jericho and Ai, or that the image of Hebrew slaves fleeing Egypt into Egyptian provinces doesn't exactly seem very convincing.
Hence the chronology needs to be revised: David Rohl I believe tries to shift the Egyptian chronology (a foolhardy task if ever there was one), while most apologists have tried to shift the Biblical chronology (to the 13th century). Using the latter, Jericho would have been not much more than little village with no walls when the 2 million Israelites arrived to sack it. Joel |
