Between a rock and a hard place..
My name is Blake, and I've fairly recently declared myself an atheist. I've never really had any sort of faith, although I can't say I didn't try. My parents, although not too devout, and most (if not all) of my friends are Christians, and I'm not sure how to act in certain situations.
For instance, at marching band competitions, there always seems to be a Christian or a group of them that gather a lot of people together to pray before we march. In the past, I've simply joined them, bowed my head, and pretended to pray. I feel extremely uncomfortable doing that, but I hate for them to notice that I'm not participating. A second example, and possibly a harder situation from which to escape, is that my family, usually before a holiday meal, says grace. This is initiated by my aunt, who is a slightly more devout Christian than my parents. I, in this situation as well, bow my head as if to pray. I feel just as uncomfortable in this situation as in the aforementioned. Is there some different way that any of you suggest I act during these situations? Simply remove myself and not bow my head? Any other suggestions? Thanks |

Firstly, this is not the forum for this kind of discussion. Head on over to the Secular Lifestyle & Support forum, and you'll get a wider, better audience for your questions.
Secondly, do what makes you comfortable. |
