Peculiar question about Hindus/Hinduism
I'd like to preface this by noting that my mother, under all normal circumstances, is an even-tempered and intelligent woman, but she came up with the most bizarre allegation I'd ever heard. In discussing the whole pledge issue, I mentioned to her that it could be found offensive by Hindu Americans, for example, and her response was along the lines of, "Well, they hate this country anyway and don't want to be a part of it." My jaw dropped, and when pressed, she only insisted that she knew the Hindu culture hated America. At this point I'm pretty sure she's completely ignorant of Hinduism, but I decided to ask anyway--is there any reason to think she has even a clue?

The Hindu religion occupies a relatively high position in my aesthetic ladder along with Greco-Roman paganism. Its superior ethics and sense of taste in comparison to that of the Bible is glaring...
Okay, back to topic. Hindus are very successful in the United States, which irks some people who are insecure about their own ethnic placement. I guess the Christians should start getting off its arse and WORK in order to catch up with the Jews and the Hindus, instead of whining and wailing about their lost power . Actually, I doubt her reaction has anything to do with race/ethnicity; she's never indicated any concern about any ethnicity before. She is, however, heavily indocrinated in Catholicism, so I think religious ignorance more likely than a racist concern.

Hindus have quickly become the primary owners of hotels throughout much of the country. Of the 2 dozen or so hotels around me, perhaps 5 are run by non-Hindus. For such a small minority in this country, many of them prosper quite well.

Pfft. She's a catholic. That's the answer right there.
I was spending the weekend with my girlfriend while her heavily catholic father was out of town last weekend. Out of sheer curiosity, I picked up his latest issue of "Latin Mass" and perused some of the articles. I had to put it down tho, because my blood pressure can only take so many statements along the lines of (direct quote): "Only the true Church has any right to religious liberty, or freedom of religion. People have no right to propogate error." [Edit: The LEAST offensive article in that magazine was their interview with Pat Buchanan. At least he said he'd allow non-Christians in the country to worship, as long as they didn't do it publically or evagelize or critisize the Church, if he was in charge.] [ July 13, 2002: Message edited by: Veil of Fire ]</p> |

Daemon, she might be confusing Hindus with Muslim fundamentalists who are always going on about how evil the liberated West is.
