Post Xian right flexes its muscle in Texas Republican party

Here's an excerpt from a truly frightening article:

Quote:

The 2002 Texas Republican Party platform depicts a twilight looking-glass world. It’s a place beset by enemies, where the purity of the culture, under constant siege, must be protected from threats both internal and external. Congress is urged "to deploy our military forces to secure our international borders." Immigration must be severely restricted.

<snip>

A plank entitled "equality for all citizens" urges the repeal of hate crimes legislation. Another states: "We oppose any criminal or civil penalties against those who oppose homosexuality out of faith, conviction, or belief in traditional values." Since the Bible is the Truth, teachers should have the right to instruct their public school students in "creation science." And those women who choose to terminate their pregnancies should be charged criminally. Lest anyone forget, "America is a Christian nation."

I heard the banquet at the convention was a white sheet and hood affair.

Perhaps some good will come from this - it may push some fencesitters and moderates over to the Dem side.

Nelson Rockefeller must be spinning in his grave at the thought of right wing religious reactionaries in control of the party.

This Texas convention pushed me into leaving the RNC and Republican Senate Resource Committee and writing nastygrams to every leader in the Party announcing I'd joined the Libertarians. Marc Raccicot had the decency to write me thanking me for my past support. Bill Frist ignored me of course since he's a fundie himself.

I have to say that in all my life I've never seen anything so frightening outside of an Aryan Nations pamphlet. Pat Robertson packing the Republican caucuses in Washington State was scary enough. One can only hope the Dems stomp the Texas Republicans into the mud they seem to prefer.

As a democrat, I think this is marvelous. The more the christian right enlighten the world to their true agenda, or otherwise just open their mouths, the more voters will not be fooled by them. On a side note, it is sad to see the party of Lincoln, TR, and Rockefeller becoming a Taliban clone.

I don't know, but people may buy into this load of horseshit. moderate xtians that feel their beliefs are being threatened may see this platform as a road to religious salvation from the unpatriotic, commie, pinko, infidelic bastages.
After all, the atheist conspiracy to rid the land of it's xtian foundation is a big topic in the news, especially the conservative news. Over time, some of the toothless will be more inclined to hop on the wagon, if they aren't already on it.
Also, this issue may draw people from both sides to the voter box. I just hope it's the more liberal thinker that see's his/her vote will be needed this election.
