Post Logic, where for art thou?

Here are two letters that appeared in today's Athens Banner-Herald paper.

Quote:
Anonymous claims against Capt. Ruff draw criticism

It was with great sadness and frustration that we read the headlines about Capt. David Ruff's removal from the U.S. Navy Supply Corps School. We are sad our friend has had his fine reputation called into question overnight. We are frustrated the coward who instigated this matter was not named nor were the allegations revealed. The article was written in such a way as to leave the reader wondering what horrible deed was committed by the captain.
David Ruff is a well-liked, highly respected member of this community and a devout Christian. He has taken bold stands for the Lord in his time here in Athens. We all know the venom that currently spews from anti-Christians -- witness the recent ruling against reciting ''under God'' in the Pledge of Allegiance. Dr. James Dobson of the Christian ministry Focus on the Family as well as other Christian leaders have suffered tremendous attacks, threats and allegations by groups hostile to Christianity. Let's face it: It is politically incorrect to be a believer, especially in government.
We think it is safe to assume that this outrageous action against Capt. Ruff had much to do with his faith and his candidness about it. We are very suspicious of the motivation of the anonymous ''tipster'' to attempt to destroy a man's dignity a week before retirement following a stellar career in the Navy. We challenge him to come forward and make public the alleged ''wrongdoings.'' Meanwhile we encourage the people to be very skeptical of the accusatory tone of the article and to treat Capt. Ruff with the respect and fairness that he deserves.
Our Lord says, ''Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you'' (Matthew 5:11-12). Capt. David Ruff is in very good company!

Headline misrepresented letter writer's position

Thank you for printing my letter about the Pledge of Allegiance; however, I feel your headline did mischaracterize my position. I in no way wished to present a politically correct position where all religions are considered equivalent simply because I believe personal concepts of God are usually silly.
If Islam and Christianity were seen in evolutionary terms where both share a common ancestor in the Old Testament, as we do to primates, then Islam would be as chimps and Christianity as men (such as we are). There is no question that Islam should be considered harmful in the long run in our society for its intolerance to various groups and violent proclivities hard wired in its Koran. The events of 9/11 and after have revealed this religion's true color. Islam's huge number of followers (mostly from intimidated or defeated ancestors) fails to legitimize it in the United States.
Simply because we allow freedom of religion should in no way obligate our government to regard Islam as mainstream any more than the Aztecs or headhunters of Brazil. In fact, perhaps it's time to consider an amendment to the Constitution to deal with Islam and harmful cults in general so that ''reason'' can continue to prevail.

Well it is Athens you know... And like I have cried out many times before: to hell with Georgia! Maybe you should transfer to Tech?

So, what was the motivation for posting these articles?

&lt;semantic nitpick&gt;
The word "wherefore" actually means something closer to "why." "Wherefore art thou, Romeo" was Juliet's way of expressing frustration that Romeo was born a Montague, her family's mortal enemies.
&lt;/semantic nitpick&gt;

We now return you to your regularly scheduled display of popular intolerance.

If anyone ever asks you for an example of irony:

Dear God,

I just read some letters to the Editor from Athens, Georgia. Did you put them up to this? If so, why? If not, why don't you shut them up? Is it because you are not real? Or do you simply not involve yourself at all with the mortal world?

Thanks,

Jesus

I've yet to hear anyone's personal conception of God that wasn't either draconian, insane or just plain stupid.

Okay, I don't get it. Was he trying to be sarcastic with one of his letters? Is he bi-polar? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

a very minor quibble: let's stop saying "where FORE art thou", okay?; because in Romeo & Juliet, it/she means/asks "WHY are you(called) *Romeo*?" Her question does NOT mean "WHERE are you?" Okay? I'm jest bitchin because this is an irrational teethgritter 4 me... Abe

Juliet was musing to herself -- this was not a direct address to Romeo. The quote should be, "wherefore art thou Romeo?" (no comma)
