Rastafaria
Hey Marley fans:
What is Rastafaria? I get bored easily, so try to give me not too much more than a concise dictionary-type definition. [ July 21, 2002: Message edited by: mattmattmattmattv ]
|

this would be the place to ask here.
more Rastafarians used to hang out in spirituality board but the Christians fed them to the lions. your best chance for a response would probably be on the music board here. |

Rastafarianism is a pan-African (or at least pan-diasporan) eschatological movement, basically. It was started by Marcus Garvey. It's basically that Africans are the real Jews, and that their problems with Europeans are b/c Jews have been oppressed throughout history. Eventually, according to the Rastafarians, they will return to their African homeland.

Rastafaris believe Halle Salais (sp?), the last Ethiopian king, was the second coming of Jesus Christ. He will return them to the motherland someday.
From a sociological perspective, it's easy to understand the appeal of the religion to Africans. Halle Salais was the most powerful black man in the world. His nation was one of only two not to be conquered by European Colonists (the other being Liberia, a nation founded by black Americans). Before WWI, his soldiers fought bravely against a superior Italian Force. Of course, he denied he was the Christ, but many Rastafaris viewed this as PROOF that he was Jesus. Only a Messiah would deny his own divinity. |

Don't ask how I know this.
Much like Buddhism is hard to describe I would say so is Rastafaria. Allmost all the Rastas I knew believed 1 thing. You had to smoke a fuck of a lot of pot. And then one day if you got high enough you would meet Ja (sp?) and he would tell you whats up. I gave it my best shot (I mean quarters of hydro a night) but never found him |
