Post Conservative Christianity spreads in Third World

I am writing to encourage all to buy a copy of the October, "The Atlantic Monthly". There is an excellent article by Philip Jenkins entitled,"The Next Christianity".

Essentially his argument is that all the attention on Islam is blinding us to the fact that conservative and very orthodox versions of christianity are exploding in Africa, Asia and South America.

He is calling all this a "Second Reformation". Like the first one, which split christian(catholic) Europe in two, this reformation could split the somewhat liberal forms of christianity in the Northern Hemisphere from the neo-Medieval forms in the South. The forms of christianity in the southern parts of the world are more like Middle Ages Europe, with belief in witchcraft, superstition and hierarchial clergy.

He claims that the Catholic Church is already dominated by the rise of the old style religion in the Southern Hemisphere, and thus doesn't care about such things as women priests, clergy child-rape or rights of believers. The future Pope will be chosen by the cardinals of Africa and Asia. John Paul 2 has made sure of that, he says.
He doesn't only focus on the RCC. He says that the radical fundy Pentacostal sect is exploding.
Anyway, read his article. He explains himself better than I do.

Any thoughts on this?
