Probably on the wrong forum but...
I am an athiest and my mother is a theist. She watches my son for a few hours in the afternoon until I can pick him up from Mon to Friday. During this time I suspect that she talks to my son about her beliefs which is fine. Exposure to different points of view is not a bad thing. He doesn't know that I don't believe since I think he's too little to understand such things in any case. He's only 7 years old. Today I became a little concerned however about just what it is that she might be telling him.
Tonight when I put him to bed he asked me the usual question of, "Do you love me more than anything?" To which I answer, "Yes, of course I do!" To which he replied, "Well Grandma said that she doesn't love me more than anything because she loves Jesus first and me second. It's okay though I guess." I hardly think that telling a little boy something like this is appropriate. You would think that someone who is concerned with every little thing a young child should or should not be exposed to would have better sense than to say such a thing. Obviously I was mistaken. Needless to say I'm a little put out because my son is obviously hurt. Now my question is how to tactfully approach this matter and what responses would my fellow users have for my wayward parent. Thanks! |

If you mention it to your mother, it will obige her to speak to your child again about Jesus and why she loves him more than anyone alive.
I'd be inclined to say: "grandma can't hug Jesus, but she can hug you, and anyway, people say all sorts of funny things. What's important is what they do." Or something like it. |
