I believe that the same criteria for determining whether one should act nice to adults should apply to children as well. For such things as politeness and human decency, there shouldn't be a distinction between adults and children.

However, speaking as a 13 year old who has been inadvertantly demeaned and embarassed by adults acting "nice" (read: usage of unnecessary simplification of terms, or talking down, or the use of the aformentioned "kid's menu"), I must clarify between normal human decency and respect and treating children like intellectual inferiors.

It all depends on the definition.
