FWD: Funds needed for Cobb County Sticker case.
From: owner-evolistga@listproc.gsu.edu
Sent: Tuesday, April 08, 2003 9:35 PM To: evolistga@listproc.gsu.edu The Georgia ACLU currently does not have enough funds on hand to proceed with Jeff Selman et al's case against the anti-evolution textbook stickers in Cobb County. A success on those stickers would head off a lot of future trouble not only in Georgia but in other states as well. If you can, please contribute to this worthy cause. No amount is too small (or too large!). Unfortunately defending science education is not cheap. Hopefully we can keep the cost of the deposition down by prioritizing who we depose. If we can't raise enough for every one, we can at least get the main players like Tippins and Plenge. The goal though is to depose everyone that will strengthen our case and that will cost between $3000 and $3500. Details via Jeff: Betty Seagraves is the fund raiser at ACLU of GA. She said that tax deductible donations can be sent to the ACLU of Georgia Foundation. A note *MUST* accompany the donation stating that you are giving it specifically for the Cobb County School Board case involving the placement of a religion based disclaimer of evolution in science books. Ms.Seagraves suggested the following form for the note: "I am forwarding this donation to The ACLU of Georgia Foundation for the sole purpose of funding the litigation against Cobb County Board of Education's evolution disclaimer suit. I was not solicited to send these funds and have forwarded them willingly and for the mentioned purpose." She said you can send checks made payable to The ACLU of Georgia Foundation and the earmarked note to: The ACLU of Georgia 142 Mitchell Street suite 301 Atlanta Georgia 30303 You can also call the ACLU and donate by credit card over the phone but you still need to send them an earmark note for their records. The phone number is 404-523-6201 ask for Debbie Seagraves. A third way is to pay on The ACLU web site at ACLUGA.org. You still have to send the follow up earmark note. |

I just got off the phone with Debbie Seagraves at the ACLU of Georgia.
At this point they can not accept donations from their web page. Their paypal account is restricted to memberships only. She can take a credit card # over the phone, but you will still need to send the note eramarking the donation to the Cobb County case via surface mail. I desided to just send a check along with the note. Thanks to RufusAtticus for the post. |

You ought to recommend that they set up a pay pal account... Good luck, by the way!
Edit: next time, I'll read all of the posts before responding... |

Thanx, Dr. GH.
BTW: Gifts to the ACLU Foundation are fully tax-deductible to the donor; membership dues and gifts to the ACLU are not tax-deductible. This is because the ACLU engages in substantial legislative lobbying, which cannot by law, be supported by tax-deductible funds. The ACLU Foundation, on the other hand, conducts our litigation and communications efforts, and contributions to it are tax-deductible. |

Yall are uncool!!!
This is supposed to be a free nation!!!
As a 3+ decade resident of Georgia, I am of the opinion that Cobb County has a long tradition of short sighted and ignorant government. I feel very strongly on that. The officials the people of Cobb County elect have a duty to educate the children in public schools in a manner that the electorate chooses. I believe Biblical Creationism is a load of horse manure, but the people of Cobb County should have the right to think as they please. They should be allowed to teach kids science as they understand it (not well IMO). Yall have no business in a free nation forcing your ideology upon other people in such local matters... If yall wish to attempt to influence the outcome of an election, that is perfectly acceptable... To short circuit the Democratic process with a court case shows little respect for Democracy and Free Thought!!! It is pitiful to see what the once noble ACLU has become in the last 40 years. I sincerely hope your court case fails miserably at the earliest point possible in the Judicial Process, at least expense to the taxpayers of Georgia and Cobb County. |
