The Spirit's Supper
1 Cor.11
(23)For I received from [the Lord] {John} what I also passed on to you: [The lord Jesus] On the night he was betrayed, he took bread, (24)and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is [my] {the Spirit’s} [body] {bread} which is for you; do this in [remembrance] {RECOGNITION} of [me] {HIM}." (25)In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the NEW COVENANT IN [my blood] {THE SPIRIT}, drink it in [remembrance] {RECOGNITION} of [me] {HIM} ." (26)For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you PROCLAIM the… [Lord’s death] …{Spirit.} [until he comes]. (27)Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the [Lord] {Spirit} in an [unworthy] {impure} [manner] {spirit} will be guilty of [sinning against] {disobeying} the Spirit. (28)A man ought to examine [himself] {his spirit} before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. (29)For anyone who eats and drinks without RECOGNISING the [body] {Spirit} of [the Lord] {God} eats and drinks judgment on himself. *** The important point about the Spirit's supper was to RECOGNISE the presence of the Spirit in the here and now. The participants PROCLAIMED the Spirit when the ate the pure bread and drank the new "wine". The new covenant (v.25) was the new covenant in the Spirit (2 Cor. 3:6 - He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant -- not of the [letter] {law} but of the Spirit). It was John the prophet who passed-on the ritual to James, the writer of 1 Cor. The liqiuid in the cup was probably water - John and James being Recahbite. Geoff |
