The Janis correlation was just that she was a singer from the conservative state of texas who spoke out in favor of individuality and free thinking. Anybody from texas who insults Bush encroaches on free thinking. That's why I connected them with Janis directly underneath the "We are ashamed that the President is from Texas" quote.

Of course she could out-sing them. Especially pre-smoking/drinking Janis.

As an ordinary person, I find it amazing what they did.

As a musician, it wasn't a very clever move. Sullster has outlined pretty much all of the points. They jeopardized the group's future and their label. While everyone has the right to voice dissent, they should not have abused their venue in that manner.

Besides, stage-talk should consist only of witty banter between the band members, and sometimes the audience.

My thoughts exactly. Which is why I am so impressed.

Default Democracy in the US

I'm an Australian, so I wouldn't really know, but it seems interesting that the Bush administration goes on about installing democracy in Iraq, yet this Dixie Chicks nonsense illustrates that democracy doesn't seem very alive in your own country! Scary.

I watch news out of Nashville and they said tonight that several local radio stations have stopped playing any Dixie Chicks songs, because of the numbers of people who called in and complained about them.

Wow, my respect for them just rocketed as well. This isn't what I'd expect from a good-ol' country group.

They stand by their ideals even though their fanbase may be pissed? Good for them!

I guess we'll just see how "free" speech is over here...

Texas will kick dixie chick ass up and down the streets. Mark my words.
What doesn't add up here is that you post this on a board devoted to promoting freethought.

Default Duct tape and burning "books"

From AP:

Quote:
The Web site for KSCS-FM, also in Dallas-Fort Worth, showed a photo of the three-member group, with black tape over Maines' mouth. The headline at www.kscs.com read: "Have The Dixie Chicks Gone Too Far?"

<snip>
WDAF in Kansas City set trash cans outside the radio station for people to throw their Dixie Chicks CDs away.
This kind of people do not understand what is The Right of Free speech!

[quote]In San Antonio, Ben Reed, regional vice president for Cox Radio, said country station KCYY-FM will pull the Dixie Chicks from its playlist over the weekend and evaluate the situation

<snip>
In El Paso, Steve Gramzay, program director for KHEY-FM, said the station has received complaints and won't play any Dixie Chicks songs this weekend.
<snip>
He said the temporary ban will "give everybody a chance to cool down."[quote]
[b]These guys are just reacting as they can in the situation. I think it is sober reaction, because they have to think of the share-holders interests too.[b]

But I can not understand this talk about "that the entertainment people should just enternain"?
It is an art to say things, speacially in a country as USSR was.
When Vysotski sang here some 25 years ago: "Save Our Souls", every citizen new what it was about.
When he sang
"why do You drive in the same tracks as the guy before you?
why do You make the tracks deeper for those who comes behind You?
Can't You see how hard it will be for the future guys to come up from these tracks?"
well, even KGB understood what he was singing about.

An artist has always have to have the ultimate freedom to express himself/herself! Always!

When John Lennon spoke off-stage about the peace, did he "go over limit?"

Fuck, I think I begin to give courses about freedom; just buy a ticket to St Petersburg and I fetch You there.
Two weeks will be enough of listening about "non-freedom", history of life in USSR. Even the most stubborn red-neck! I will translate.
Fuckuty fuck, I have to stop here I get so angry!

Welcome to Siberia!

Yes if I find the addresses of these two first mentined duct-tape-book-burners-red-neck-freepers, I will certainly send them a letter they never forget!

Send them here!!!
