Take the test!!! Xians and Infidels!! Myers-Briggs correlations?
I've often wondered, but have seen no real studies on personality in Myers-Briggs vs religious orientation.
Myself, I am an INTP (in the Myers-Briggs test, which includes 16 variations of personality originally developed by Carl Jung), which I believe(by virtue of the NT nature) should have a higher rate of atheists/agnostics (like myself) than other personality types. I believe that most NT's, even other that INTP, are also more likely to be non-believers. Bill Gates is a supposed INTP, as is Einstein, Pascal, Decartes, Darwin, Sagan, Jung, and Socrates. This is what got me thinking about it since these are also infidels for the most part. "INTP:The most conceptual and logical of the types" though being only 1% of the population it must be that this is only a part of the infidel population. Are the others found in the rest of the NT's? Are believers a different personality overall? I have taken this test in the 300 question "proctered" mode, then other shorter versions and always come out the same. Even when I think that I have changed many answers, the result is the same but is different for many friends of mine, mostly co-workers. Another aspect for which I see a personal correlation is that of being left-handed and being a non-believer. I just wonder what persons of the agnostic/atheist persuasion on these boards think of such correlations. ??????? Take the test here: http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes1.htm Please answer 1) religious orientation 2) M-B letters 3)handedness 4) what you think about all of this 5) anything you want of course!!! Maybe there's no correlation after all but it is fun to look!!! Trillian |

Interesting...
In this particular test, I came out as an "INTP". I have taken both the proctored and non-proctored MB before (several times), and almost always come out as an "INTJ" although my "I" and "E" are close together and I have come out as an "ENTJ" on two occasions. I'm also almost always a strongly expressed "T", although here I came out as only moderately expressed.
At any rate, for your analysis: 1) Humanist (agnostic atheist) 2) INTP 3) Right handed 4) These type of tests can be informative, but should be taken with a grain of salt. I would say that, like I.Q. tests, they measure I/E-ness, N/S-ness, T/F-ness, & P/J-ness, but what correlation these things have to the real world is somewhat of an open question... I believe it was mentioned several times before, but I am too lazy to dig them up.
BTW, a consistent INTP Mostly right-handed, but used to be left-handed in childhood. Might be because left-handedness was considered abnormal so the teachers corrected it during my elementary school. Humanist and existentialist aesthete (atheist by choice) |

1) atheist
2) ENFP 3) Right handed 4) I got the distinct feeling that if someone answered exactly opposite me they would be autistic or socially retarded. 5) Does this test indicate Asperger's Syndrome or something? The description seems pretty close I guess Champion, ENFP |

1st, thanks for the quick responses, I think were on a good path to getting a perspective on this. Anyone? Is there a prior thread that already dealt with this? Please let me know.
Also, feel free to give your exact scores as many people fall on the cusp. I'm an I=30 N=85 T=65 P=76 (I now realize I spelled "proctored" wrong, please give me a break for having to work for Procter&Gamble for 7 years (and NO, they do not worship devils!). ) I should have stated in the original post that there is no "right" or "beneficial" personality type. The most successful CEO's are ESTJ's, but they may or may not be the most fulfilled or the happiest (as we all could have guessed). All the types have their vices and virtues and different ways the personality may manifest itself. And The M-B is only a simplistic look into very complex human nature. Still , perhaps some people will be able to learn that others come from a different "general" perspective, based on their inherent personalities, and be more tolerant of others' views. I have certainly benefited from this knowledge as a Negotiations Specialist. AND !!! I would certainly be interested in the correlations which I hope will be forthcoming from ALL types!! I just hope the the wording of my original question did not discourage people of other types from responding. None of my own friends are my type....arrgghhhh!! Cheers! Trillian PS. If enough responses come through I will attempt to summarize the results, though the sample size may be somewhat small for anything definite. |

1. Non-theist.
2. INTJ 3. Right handed. 4. I don't make much of the right vs left handedness, but I've always felt like the Meyers-Briggs had me pretty well pegged. I was a Christian for many, many, many years so obviously there are other factors, but it could have been my NT-ness that let me eventually logic my way out of it despite those other factors. *To the INTP's on the board. What keeps you from floating off into space? |
