Why is American TV so lame?
Theres a show called "Shock video" on HBO that shows very censored little snippets of wild television shows from around the world.
These shows feature full frontal nudity (Female AND male),sexual situations from mundane to extreme and bizarre gross out stuff that makes Americas Fear Factor look like Thanksgiving dinner. Here in America all we have is Howard Stern showing censored strippers and pay per veiw adult channels that still show you NOTHING even though you`ve paid and proven you`re a consenting adult. WTF? My guess is that Christianity is causing my TV to be so lame, but correct me if I`m wrong. Perhaps there are other factors at work here that I`m not aware of,but a couple of clues are immediately apparent...... 1.)Japan,who was never big on Christianity, definitely seems to have the wildest uncensored shows. 2.)Europe comes in at a very close second for wild TV and all I`ve been hearing for years from Billy Graham,Falwell and other big American religious leaders is that Europe is losing it`s Christianity. 3.) America is the most religious (Christian) country in the world and has the lamest most heavily censored TV. [ June 24, 2002: Message edited by: Anunnaki ]
|

I thought lame == full frontal nudity. American TV shows and movies are so plotless.
But in the definition of "lame" you suggest, yes, in the U.S., everyone has a lobby, so if the Senate proposes that more nudity be allowed on TV, the Fundy^H^H^H^H^HFamily Lobby will stop the bill dead. [ June 24, 2002: Message edited by: ashibaka ]
|

BTW,
I`m not suggesting that shows about ejaculation contests (Japan) and contests to see who can put the most severed bulls penises into their mouths (England) is *quality* TV. What I`m saying is that *I* should have the freedom to watch if I want. America is FAR from being the land of freedom people make it out to be. |

I'm sure you could go to any phone book and look up the information on your nearest porn video stores in your area. American T.V. has enough problems as it is, lets not go around increasing them.

In theory, FOX could air a jerkoff contest (though it would have to involve washed-up celebrities) -- but it would pay a price. Those in the community who are offended that such a thing is on publicly-owned airwaves could demand that the government bring the hammer down. But FOX and other broadcasters are businesses, and for that reason they try to avoid making consumers angry. And personally, I don't see the virtue in airing the Penis Show just to prove you can. It's a quaint concept called "Good Taste." However, I'm sure the day will come when TV viewers of various tastes will have greater access to whatever content gets them off. |

Just thought I'd add another point to this thread.
I also do not wish to be de-sensitized to things such as nudity or profanity. These things are what make life just that much more exciting for me. Producing these things through mass media, I feel, would cause a decline in the sensation of these things (for America, I mean). |

Is there a watershed on American TV? Over here, on all terrestrial channels (all 5 of them!) you can do what you like basically after 9pm, but no nudity, swearing etc. before that time. Im not sure if its a law or anything, just a guideline, and its not always that strictly followed. I don't think there's any religious influence on our television, there certainly aren't many religious programmers, except Songs of Praise (I actually find it quite enjoyable, I love the architecture in cathedrals, and some of the hyms are decent). There's certainly a lot of politics however, especially the BBC, who are headed by staunch lefty worm, Greg Dyke. They even told the BBC news presenters not to wear black ties when the Queen Mother died! |
