Medical question
I'm just double checking what my doctor told me...A month or two ago I noticed I had developed a hydrocele. There also appeared to be a knotty cord running along the back of the scrotum. I was given an oral medication for one week for epididymitis, but running still seems to inflame the area. He said the hydrocele was nothing to worry about. Does anyone know if anyone who has developed hydrocele in their late teens? Did it cause any problems, did they get surgery?

Hydroceles are fluid collections that form between a specific tiissue plane in the scrotum. Hydroceles often resolve spontaneously and usually don't require any treatment in older boys or adults; however, surgical treatment is usually necessary for: 1) hydroceles complicated by a inguinal hernia or cryptorchidism, 2) hydroceles appearing at an older age that don't resolve over 36 months, 3) giant testicular hydroceles that are a hindrance for daily life.
Hydroceles often form sontaneously, but inflammatory conditions such as the epididymitis you had may have triggered it; if that is the case, the odds are good that your hydrocele will eventually resolve on its own as long as the epididymitis was adequately treated. The above is not a medical diagnosis or advice for treatment for any condition in a specific individual, nor is it a substitute for medical care. It is merely general information. If symptoms persist or worsen, see your doctor or other healthcare professional. |
