Default Expand our influence

After searching the Internet for a while I have noticed that the vast majority of our (freethinkers) effort is exhausted on Christianity. It's almost like the conflict is exclusively atheist vs. christian. I don't understand why.

Over the last 50 years the world population of Christians has increased about 47%. The world population of Muslims has increased by 235%. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world and is rapidly penetrating Western society. It is estimated that if current trends continue, Islam will become the most popular world religion some time in the mid-21st century.

Muslims constantly exercise the scientific-hermeneutic approach in which they claim that the scientific accuracy of the Qur'an is proof of its divine origin. Many people are taken in by this and are led to convert to Islam because they are tricked into believing that the Qu'ran contains scientific facts that were not discovered by modern science until many centuries after the writing of the Qu'ran. In reality, the Qu'ran is littered with scientific absurdities and blatant inaccuracies. We cannot continue to ignore this. So far the only good freethought sites on Islam that I have seen are www.geocities.com/freethoughtmecca and www.secularislam.org. And these are not nearly as detailed as some of the sites devoted to debunking Christianity.

It's time we expand our influence to Islam.

Hi mbsoccer31

Please refer to the Secular Web FAQ: Why do the Internet Infidels focus so much on Christianity? If you have further suggestions about the Secular Web in general, feel free to raise them in the Feedback forum.

As it is, I think this topic is more appropriate to GRD, so off it goes.

Usually the same arguments that apply to Christianity apply to Islam as well. Islam has the same omni-max deity as Christianity. What is needed is to translate atheistic articles into Arabic. I wanted to do this long ago but I'm still not competent enough.

As for Qur'anic criticism, it's still in its infancy, though great strides are being made.

I understand your point, but I've received much more respect and tolerance from Muslims than I have from Christians (in general. I know many individual Christians and we have mutual respect--I'm talking about the religion as a whole). When they start knocking on my door on the weekend or trying to "save" my kid from hell, then I'll have an issue with them. Until then, live and let live.

In the USA at least, it's probably because Islam is still decidedly in the minority, and is demonized by the majority. It's funny how Catholics were all for state/church separation and social justice when they were a demonized minority here, but now not so much. And just look at the level of religious tolerance prevalent in prodominantly Muslim countries.

One reason could be that Christianity has a long apologetic tradition, whereas Islam seems to be somewhat less encouraging of intellectual discourse. If they don't want to play, it's difficult to confront their ideas...
