Recommendations for Surveys of the Sciences
Please advise, if you will, on books from each broad field of the natural sciences that you believe introduces the most uptodate findings and trends. One or two books from each of biology, chemistry and physics would be appropriate.
On the other hand, I expect some posters will object that the many subsets of each of these fields could be addressed in their own individual right, but please note that I'm looking for concise introductory surveys, not a scholar's feast. Many thanx. |

For physics, I would recommend Brian Greene's book The Elegant Universe. It is primarily about whether or not String Theory will amount to be the "Theory of Everything" (ToE), but in the process, Green manages to discuss most of the key points on the forefront of modern cosmology, quantum mechanics, and high energy physics.

"Science News" is probably the best publication that fits your needs. It is a weekly magazine about 16 pages an issue, that reports briefly in layman's language on the latest developments in real science with references to the people and scholarly articles that form the basis for the articles.
