Default The star

It is stated in Matthew's Gospel that the Magi were led to Jesus by a magical guiding star. Apparentally there's been a scientific search for this star over the years, with people such as Arthur C. Clarke getting involved in it's investigation. Some have said it's Halley's comet or Venus.
However the allussion is probably to one of the oracles of Balaam in the book of numbers- "A star shall rise out of Jacob". However, as with many NT "fufillments" there are problems. Balaam then goes on to say that the "Star out of Jacob" will brutally subdujate the surrounding countries....which clearly applies to Israel and not Jesus, who certainly did not go around crushing skulls.
