I think the larger point was that 'free will' is not something we find in the world. It's absence constitutes one more bit of evidence to the very substantial amount that suggests that God is a fiction and a fantasy.

But your counter is true in more ways than one. There's no purpose in asking the 'why' of God, because God doesn't provide any meaningful or deep answers. God is just explanatory window dressing on cosmological ignorance.

Who created the mosquito and the fly, and malaria? This is not cancer, or parkinson's, or alzheimers. These are creatures that spread disease and filth. Unless Satan created the mosquito, God created a blood drinker. Why? Oh, and none of this... "God's will is a mystery crap". Why are there parasites? Not symbiotes, but a parasite like a mosquito.

God created parasites so we shouldn’t forget how very difficult He can make life for us, when He wants to. It is a measure of His love for us, for it keeps us humble and in awe of Him, and prevents the sin of hubris which is a great hindrance to our entry into Paradise. Not getting into Paradise is, after all, a far worse fate than getting malaria for if we are not in Paradise we are forever tormented in the Fires of Hell and Damnation. Most people would prefer a bit of Ebola to that.
Mental illness serves the same purpose, in that its existence prevents us from pretending we understand God the Incomprehensible, which wouldn’t be allowed even if we could.
