Angry They STILL think they can change us! - re: GAMOW

From the II newswire comes this <a href="http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewCommentary.asp?Page=%5CCommentary%5Carchive%5C 200210%5CCOM20021030c.html" target="_blank">piece of garbage</a> where some theist thinks that the GAMOW is akin to some great big cry for help. The author seems to think that deep down we want to be "saved." The letter starts out innocently enough, but you can tell what his bias is towards us non-believers.

Citing the growth of the non-believing population, he says:
Quote:
This is a worrisome trend, particularly at this point in our history when we are confronting a resurgent threat from Islam. At the very time we need to steel ourselves as a nation by reinforcing our Judeo-Christian beliefs, we may have a vocal force urging what is the equivalent of disarming ourselves by advocating further abandonment of our religious traditions.
ARRRGH! <img src="graemlins/banghead.gif" border="0" alt="[Bang Head]" /> First, we're not "disarming ourselves," and secondly, they're not MY traditions!
He continues:
Quote:
Well, those of us who are believers should realize that we are important salesmen for the righteousness of our country and our God. The simple explanation is that we lead by example and, if enough of us do it right, then hopefully the "Godless" millions will come to appreciate our viewpoint.
Funny, some of us think that a similar approach will cause you to lose faith!
Wait! Now here it is, how we all hate our families:
Quote:
Now, the status of the natural family is under assault in our own country in this post-modern era. No dictator has done this. Much of the fault lies with us and, in particular, an elite that no longer believes in the essence of the Judeo-Christian tradition. But regardless of where and whom the blame lies, such God-free thinking has taken hold in our country. I believe it is safe to assert that the beliefs of the majority of the atheists and freethinkers, etc. who will be at this march are unlikely to place much importance at all on the natural family, for instance.
Yeah, that's what caused broken families. [/sarcasm] I thought it was poor marriages and the me generation that can't be bothered with the responsibility of raising their kids to become adults.

More garbage
Quote:
The "Godless Americans" who will be marching on Washington should realize that in the eyes of the Islamic fundamentalists they are as much the enemy as are the believing Christian or the Jew.

...

They should realize that it may be those of us who believe in God who may actually end up saving them from a fate far worse than the incorrectly labeled "Prayer Bullying."
I'm sorry. Exactly how is belief in god going to save me from another 9/11? I'm sure there we're lots of believers that died (another thread postulated that any non-believers did a form of the death-bed conversion ... yeah, right!).
Mercifully, he concludes:
Quote:
hope that those who participate in this march will indeed come to that conclusion -- and soon -- on their own free will, using their own God-given ability to reason, and that they will be able to use that newfound Faith to help better our country for all of us. What America once was, we can -- and should -- strive to be again.
Ahh yes, what America once was, a land that advocated slavery, and treated women and homosexuals as second class citizens (if citizens at all). Maybe some theists will see that we're not so bad after all. I can only hope.

Any other thoughts?

"Some theist" is Heritage Foundation founder <a href="http://www.onepeoplesproject.com/weyrich.htm" target="_blank">Paul Weyrich</a>. See him quoted <a href="http://www.positiveatheism.org/hist/quotes/scar_u.htm" target="_blank">here</a> (in between John Wesley and Samuel Wilberforce).

I hate when words such as truth and faith are capitalized when they are being used in reference to a god. It just makes it seem more silly.

He's an extremist nutcase. Unfortunately, they pass for mainstream in the Republican administration thesedays. But certainly not worth getting angry about his silly rants. More impotant to make a strong, positive statement at the March. He wouldn't be saying this if he weren't worried about us getting some attention

LOL. Yeah I don't care what the social-reactionaries say about the march - they're full of shit anyway.

Weyrich is apparently syndicating this article everywhere they'll let him.

<a href="http://www.freecongress.org/commentaries/021030PW.asp" target="_blank">'nuther link</a>

Falwell/Roberson were more explicit, but this "thoughtfully written" BS is just a more user-friendly way of laying the blame for Sept 11 at our feet:

Atheists "are celebrating the very corrupting influences that serve as one of the excuses -- no matter how unjustifiable -- for Islamic militants to target America for destruction. They should realize that it may be those of us who believe in God who may actually end up saving them from a fate far worse than the incorrectly labeled "Prayer Bullying..."

*Sigh*

Yes, those awful Muslims and their crazy ideas about America falling to its knees and being humbled before God and living according to the holy book. What an awful notion; the atheists don't know what they're up against. Let's hope the Judeo-Christians keep that from happening...

I hope this march generates so much positive interest that it makes conservative commentators' heads swim.

The fact that it's happening at all is very cool. Our profile and hopefully our clout will be elevated. Wish I could be there, and I'll be tuning in every chance I get.

It's 10:20am here in Florida. I've been switching back and forth between CNN and FOX news, and both are just barking about the elections. Not one word so far about the march. What time does the march start anyway?

Oh and I meant to ask: Has anyone seen any estimates on how many will be participating?

Anyone checked the print editions of the Washington newspapers to see if William J. Murray ran any ads similar to <a href="http://www.wjmurray.com/atheists.htm" target="_blank">this one</a> that he ran in the Boston Globe during the AA convention?

I wouldn't be surprised if there is another one in a Washington paper today from him, as he has stated that he will try and place them whenever atheists gather (especially any AA-supported function.)
