Post Closest relative

Howdy. What is our nearest relative (other than cousin Earl).

I assume the primate family, but, which? Chimpanze?

I think you might get a better answer in Evolution/Creation.

After a quick search for bonobo, I found a site that basucally talks about the sexual aspect of Bonobo's. With a link to ethical hedonism.

I was looking for similarities on a scientific level. My mother stopped by and wanted to discuss religion for some strange reason. Anyway, she doesn't buy into the whole common ancestor thing. her exact words.
I feel weird being 30 and have to explain things to mom. especially things she doesnt want to believe in her old age.
Does religion still attempt to deflect the 98% dna (is 98% correct) fact? On what grounds and what is the best arguement for?

You can see <a href="http://www.whozoo.org/mammals/Primates/primatephylogeny.htm" target="_blank">here</a> that bonobos & chimps split after their lineage split from the human lineage, so they are "equally" related as our closest relatives.

The <a href="http://www.gate.net/~rwms/hum_ape_chrom.html" target="_blank">Comparison of the Human and Great Ape Chromosomes as Evidence for Common Ancestry</a> is a nice example. I know my mom wouldn't comprehend it though.

This might help:

<a href="http://www.mnh.si.edu/anthro/humanorigins/faq/Encarta/encarta.htm" target="_blank">Resource Guide to Paleoanthropology</a>

And if you register with PNAS:

<a href="http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/96/18/10254#Top" target="_blank">PNAS -- Johnson and Coffin </a>

Short answer is that we are most closly related to chimps (among the living nonhuman apes). The common ancestor between Homo and Pan is not known paleontologically (yet).
