Default What did the Catholics make up?

When I was a christian I was protestant, so I don't know a whole lot about catholicism, and some of the things such as the immaculate birth and purgatory weren't part of my sect of christianity, so what I'm wondering is what all did catholics make up? And how did they come about with those things?

They made it all up.

There were catholics long before there were protestants. It's not that they made up extra stuff, it's that the pros just didn't take it all with them.

I realize that, but well I guess a better question would be where in the bible does it refer to those things?

I understand what you are asking Spaz because I asked that very question myself at one point.

I tried looking for answers in the Catholic Encyclopedia but found no answers. There appears to be nothing in the bible that specifically states that one should fast for lent or give up sex or whatnot.

Maybe a catholic will come along and enlighten us (or confuse us if it turns out to be Amos).

By the way, Amos, if you do turn up, how's the weather up there?

The Biblical reference for Lent is the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert.

Yes, indeed it is. But where does scripture mandate that one fast for forty days?

I am also curious as to where scripture mandates the ritual of putting palm ashes on one's forehead.

I am a Catholic, not a Protestant. I do not need justification for all my religious practices in Scripture.

Exceedingly difficult and oppressive schools. Although I think that's a good thing, because really what the youth of America need is real oppression, in my opinion.

I think you are missing the point.

The question is: where did all these traditions come from? If they aren't scripturally based, then who started them and why?

I am guessing most of them started in the Middle Ages, but I don't know for sure.

Putting ashes on one's forehead serves as a reminder of the brevity of life.

The self-denial of Lent is used as a means to grow closer to God.
