Default It's here! Get your copy of the Journal of the HJ

Journal of the Historical Jesus

The Journal for the Studyof the Historical Jesus provides a forum for academic discussion of Jesus within the context of first-century Palestine, but accessible to the very wide non-scholarly readership interested in the way this topic, so vital for most Christians, is and has been investigated and presented. The journal will focus on:

The journal will focus on nothing? LOL. That's funny.

I think I saw an ad for this before - it looks like they're having a little trouble getting it going.

$50 a year gets you two (count'em) issues plus a free book. The books are:
  • The Historical Jesus: A Sheffield Reader – Craig A. Evans & Stanley E. Porter

    This volume collects the best articles on the historical Jesus from the first fifty issues of the Journal for the Study of the New Testament.
  • Matthew and the Margins – Warren Carter

    This detailed commentary presents the Gospel of Matthew as a counter-narrative, showing that it is a work of resistance written from and for a minority community of disciples committed to Jesus, the agent of God’s saving presence.
  • The Criteria for Authenticity in Historical-Jesus Research – Stanley E. Porter

    Historical-Jesus research continues to captivate the interests of scholars, and recently, there has been renewed discussion of the criteria for authenticity.
  • Images of Christ – Stanley E. Porter, Michael A. Hayes & David Tombs

    Images of Christ: Ancient and Modern is a collection of essays that explores various depictions of Christ in four media: the Bible, theology, literature and the arts.

The Criteria for Authenticity sounds intriguing, but I'm afraid it would be another disappointment.

I am sure it would be. Porter is touted on evangelical web sites as a "name you can trust" -- like NT Wright. <sigh>

I wouldn't mind the article collection, though.

Where does it say anything about a free book with subscription?

Hmmmm...

The promo states, "The journal will focus on:

- weighing of historical evidence relevant to the life and teaching of Jesus, and exploration of the significance of such evidence for understanding Jesus;

- discussion of the historical methodology used in researching the historical Jesus;

- examination of the history of 'historical Jesus research';

- explorations of how the life of Jesus has been perceived in the arts and other media through the last 2000 years."

All based on the a priori assumption that Jesus existed.

<big yawn>
