Emmanuel
I'm not sure where it is said in the other infancy Gospels but in Matthew an angel comes to Joseph and says that a son will be born to him and Joseph is to name him Emmanuel, which means "God is with us."
However, Joseph names him Jesus, which means "God saves." What gives? |

As for your question, in the construction game we used to call it "retrofitting." |

I fail to recall the details, but I saw an explaination that says that the name of the Christ is never given. All references are by various titles, Emmanuel, Jesus, Christ, etc are titles, not names. To "Call him Emmanuel" is to tell others that he is the son of God...
Any Christians care to eludicate this? |

Naturally this "he shall be called Immanuel" is another one of those old testament quotes taken out of context. It's from Isaiah 6:14 and it refers to an event during the reign of king Ahaz, for before the child, which is already in the womb, knows how to refuse evil and choose good, yahweh will bring calamity to the kingdom of Judah.
There are a couple of kids which get born in Isaiah as symbolic of things. Immanuel is just another. Too bad the early christian writers didn't know their old testament. |

Personally I believe the Jesus version is the correct one, as he went on to become a messiah and not 70's soft porn star. Boro Nut |
