Angry "Head Start" may base hiring on religion

From the CNN article :
Quote:
The bill has an anti-discrimination clause, but it would not apply to groups in hiring people whose religion could affect the organization's work. The idea is backed by a court ruling and intended to keep religious groups from dropping out of the federal program, said Rep. Mike Castle, R-Delaware, the bill's sponsor.

"Faith-based organizations cannot be expected to sustain their religious mission without the ability to employ individuals who ... practice their faith, because it's that faith that motivates them to serve," Castle said.
What can be done about this? I plead "guilty" to being woefully uninformed about the process...

First thing I would want to do is read this "court ruling," and then see whether it's on appeal or anything, but the story doesn't mention it by name. Have to do some digging.

The provision may be challenged in court, if a test case can be found - an employee who was fired or not hired for religious reasons.

I think there already is a case in the courts on this - a youth counselor who was fired by her religious employer when her sexual orientation became known.

The ACLU just sent out an action alert on this:

http://www.aclu.org/ReligiousLiberty...?ID=12943&c=37

You can just fill in your ZIP code and send a free fax, and they provide alternate contact information, too.

10 cosponsors, all Republicans, one called "Duke" and another called "Buck."

Repeal the ad hominem fallacy!
