Christian Schools
I just went to my cousin's graduation from a christian school today (and I hate going to churches, they're eerie, and the guy kept talking about shit from the bible and trying to relate it to what they're doing with joshua and his 12 stones or something, and a quote from mark twain and even more ridiculous before that they had 3 fucking pledges, one to the american flag, then their church's christian flag, then the bible, wtf? I thought the one was pointless, and they had 3, but I digress.) and I was just wondering who here went to a christian school and what kind of education did you get there?

Dude, it varies all over the map. Some christian schools are quite excellent; they are all non-fundy. The mainstream Prot denominations have some excellent private schools. The Congregationalists U.C.C. started Harvard and many of the Ivy League Schools. They are now the left wing jumping off point of liberal Christianity. If you're left of the U.C.C., you're a Unitarian.
I got my BA at a Presbyterian school and got a fine education. The religion professors were very influential. They all had Doctor of Divinity degrees from Harvard and Princeton. They did not force doctrine down your throat. I took two courses from a brilliant linguist, Dr. Francisco Garcia-Treto. He was on the Bill Moyers PBS series on Genesis. The religion dept was like a branch of the philosophy department. They had chapel on campus and church every sunday but nobody had to go. Mostly it was bored rich kids worried about their tennis game. I got A's in some courses merely by acting alive and having a pulse. However, places like Oral Roberts, assorted bible colleges and whatnot are totally different. Probably pretty mediocre and busy brain washing people. The goals of a university and the goals of a fundy religion are opposite; therefore right wing church schools (like Baylor which is Baptist) are at odds with free speech and critical thinking. Fundy colleges tend to be full of rules to protect the students, who are already almost legal adults. They probably have compulsory bible study and church too. |
