The Jesus Fish evolved into the Evolution Fish after the cross was naturally selected out and the little arms were naturally selected for.

As for the origin of the Jesus Fish, some say it appeared on the back of a mini-van in the eighties somewhere in a bible-belt state. Others say it was tatooed on the rumps of christians during the first century. There is more to know about this.

The Jebus fish was used in the early church as a secret symbol that identified believers to each other but not to the powers-that-be who would persecute them if they knew they were xian. It could also inform believers of upcoming meetings, etc., and sort of stuck. Personally, I like the Evolve fish much better, though.

The fish symbol originates from the vesica pisces , deriving from so-called sacred geometry with a little astrology thrown in.
