entropic: As far as "known gods" go, I am athistic. However it seems to me to be slightly arrogant to claim that i KNOW there are no deities of any kind. This is why i am an agnostic.

I don't know why, but this bugs me every time I hear it. Ah, I guess it's the subtle (?) implication that only arrogant people would call themselves atheist.

I'm an atheist because I don't believe in any gods. I don't have any belief in gods. I don't believe that any exist. Is there any other way I can say it?

I don't "claim that I KNOW there are no deities of any kind." I don't have to, to be atheist--without belief in any.

Dianna.

Hey! Who the hell made a Marine a moderator?!? No, seriously, congratulations Jacey! And good move, by the way. Moderating seems to help folks' post counts, too. Not that post count is really that important.

The delight in outing yourself to others is the unpredictability in how they're going to react. I've learned living in Manitoba's bible belt for the past couple of years that no demographic responds in a uniform way.

Feels good making yourself known, though, doesn't it?
Yeah, my wife outed me in front of her mother (converted Catholic) and grandmother (not sure what she is, but she goes to church all the time), and I was expecting a big reaction from the grandmother anyway. But, it was basically nothing. Kind of a "well, that's his choice." I guess due to the sort of bad spin that atheists have gotten, I usually expect the worst. So, it's refreshing when you get better.

Let me invoke my Argument by Star Wars to justify Strong Atheism:

I believe that the xian god is exactly as fictional as Luke Skywalker.
I believe that the concept of gods is as fictional as the concept of Jedi Knights.

So, is it really arrogent to say that there are no Jedi? To find one, you have to pretty much destroy the definition....
