YE Creationist Biology Teacher
PART I
Is it just me or is this ironic? A biology teacher in my school is a creationist. His reasoning? Cell theory states that every cell requires a pre-existing cell. Maybe this would be an attack on abiogenesis, but what does that have to do with evolution? I asked for clarification since I do know many people who believe that God created the world and the first existing life, then left it up to nature's own devices (that God also created). I'm okay with that belief, but his clarification didn't help. "I believe God created everything." So I asked if he really meant everything, and he said, "Yes, everything". I told him that sounds very odd coming from someone who teaches Biology, and he had the audacity or pure ignorance to ask me what I meant by that. How the hell is he teaching Biology? I'm glad I'm not in his Bio class, damn! He told me that creationism simply seems more plausible, so I asked him to explain how God created the world. He said he doesn't know, and it's a matter of faith to believe so. How is that more plausible? PART II Today I told him why I think cell theory must be flawed (cell theory states that all cells come from pre-existing cells). I told him that would lead to an infinite regress, which would be logically absurd. If God created the first cell, and every cell requires a pre-existing cell, does that mean that God is a cell? His response? You can't use reason against God, God is outside of reason and in the realm of faith. So I told him that's where we both differ. I don't think faith has any substance, you do, which I don't have a problem with whatsoever. It's when someone argues that God must exist by usage of reason that I have a problem. PART III I thought this was too humorous to pass up. Today he asked me why a heavier object and a lighter object hit the ground at the same time when dropped. I had to explain the Law of Inertia to him and how it relates to the situation. Why is he teaching? Why am I teaching him? PART IV He also said that Evolution was created by atheists to explain how the world exists without requiring God. I told him I'm not huge into conspiracy theories and he dropped that one quickly. |

For crying out loud, you have whistle blowers in science come forward all the time, at risk to their own careers, to call attention to scientific fraud by their colleagues, so why not in this case?
Devil's Advocate: Not all scientific theories are based on conspiracies though, just evolution. |
